Any recs for the smallest-storing, most compact (when folded up) baby carrier for a 33lb toddler?

My child mostly walks around, but I'd love to have a teeny folded carrier in my bag for those moments he needs to ride.  Like when it starts raining and I need my hands free for the umbrella!  Any recommendations?  We currently have the lightest Ergo model, but even it has bulky padded shoulders.  I would trade some discomfort for greater portability.

Hmm, I'd say either a shorty woven wrap or a toddler sized mei tai.  Definitely not a SSC--those are so bulky, I hate trying to smash one in my diaper bag!  My woven shorties fold down to a little rectangle, and my mei tai folds down pretty little too.  Plus, I find them both more comfortable than SSCs.  If you haven't wrapped before, it will be a little bit of a learning curve.  The mei tai would be pretty quick to get the hang of though.

In a pinch, I've just worn DD in whatever I had on me, even if it's not a baby carrier.  Last time I did that, I put her in a hip carry (like a rebozo carry with a slip knot) in a pashmina I happened to have with me.  It wasn't very comfortable (they're so thin!) but it worked for the few blocks we were going!

I used a Hotsling-style carrier at that stage-- if you fold lengthwise, then roll, it takes up almost no room in a bag, but is reasonably comfortable for a short-distance hip carry.

I would say a shorty wrap, tied in a rebozo.

Another recommendation for a woven shorty. You can do hip and back carries, they fold up small and can double as blankets and scarves. It may be a bit of a learning curve but well worth it for the versatility.
