Star Wars??? (x posted in Toddlers)

I just posted this in the toddlers forum, but I wanted to get some opinions from my gals as well.

My DH is a big time star wars fan(atic). So of course he had to but the full 6 movie blu ray set that was just released. Now he is insisting that he MUST watch it with our 28mo DS. I'm just not comfortable with DS watching those movies due to the fighting violence. DH thinks I'm completely overreacting.

What do you think? Would you let a toddler watch Star Wars? Am I being too overprotective?

Thanks for any feedback you might have!

My take was no way. So I asked DH, who is a huge SW nerd. He wrinkled his nose and thought for a while. And then came up with what I think is a pretty good idea. He would let DS watch certain scenes. There are scenes that are funny, lighthearted, or interesting. Star Wars is deeply imaginative, and I'm sure your DH has a deep investment in the characters. So ask him to pick out some scenes where he can meet Han, Chewbaca, and Luke, maybe without being exposed to Darth just yet. Picking and choosing scenes is so easy with DVDs! And this way your DS can learn about a movie that's special to dad, without the full on exposure that's not really appropriate yet.

That's a great idea Michelle! I'm going to suggest it to DH and hope he doesn't think I'm crazy. Thanks!

We've had the SW-discussion here, too, and after some back and forth we agreed that DS1 (28mos) is way too young to watch any of it. But then, we don't do TV at all and when DS1 does watch on occasion, he's so wound up that we're dealing with it for a few days. He doesn't get long narratives, yet, either, and the combination of images and sounds makes for a sensory overload in our house. So, DH and DS1 will have to wait for a few more years to share SW-experiences.
