Baby's cord stump is hanging on by a thread!

Babe is 6 days old. I called the pediatrician and they said not to worry and to keep it clean and dry. I'm going to take her in tomorrow morning anyway just to be safe, but in the meantime is there anything I can do to prevent an infection? It looks so exposed! Also, should I just clip it off? It is hanging by a tiny thread.

When ds' was literally hanging by a (very dry) thread I just snipped it & then kept the area clean for a few more days until it looked all good.

Babies don't feel it, so don't worry that it's hurting them. My DS liked grabbing and pulling at things, which during a diaper change meant his cord clamp. It ended up getting pulled off almost completely at 3 days old, and fell off completely at 5 or 6. We just kept the area clean and dry. We did put a bandaid over it for a bit, so his clothes wouldn't stick to it, but the bandaid ended up sticking. He never cried b/c of us cleaning it or the bandaid or clothes getting stuck to some of the gunk. Just keep it clean, put a bit of breastmilk on it and let it dry. It'll be fine if you clip it off.

Both mine hung by a thread, I just snipped it so it wouldn't snag on anything. Never had an issue with infection.
