Live flu vaccine to be given at school...

...should I keep my son home on that day?  I'm not worried about them giving it to him, they've made it very clear on the paperwork that if they don't have all the forms perfectly filled out they won't give it.  However, I am worried about him getting exposed because of other children and potentially bringing something home to my pregnant self.

I would think you have to keep him out for more then a day. Check and find out how long it sheds.

A study showed the vaccine shed for up to 17 days in 18-49 year olds.

(pages 17-18)

Highest shedding was on days 2 and 3. After day 11, virus titers were very low.

Really makes you wonder why they use a live virus. It helps spread the flu much further then it might have gone. Helps mess the numbers up for sure.

In 9-17 year olds, the study showed shedding to last as long as 28 days.

There's no way to keep him from being exposed, unless you keep him out of school for a month.

But I would keep him out of school on vaccination day. I don't care how careful they say they are. The only guarantee that he doesn't get the vaccine is for him to not be at school that day.

Thanks everyone.  I can't realistically keep him home for a month so I guess we'll just do that one day.  Fingers crossed that if we do get the flu we have our usual, mild reactions.
