Local Anesthesia in 2WW?

Thread Starter

Having a small mole removed in 2 1/2 weeks. I will probably be in the 2WW at that point, possibly AF (or with a BFP!). They will probably inject a local anesthesia. I'm hoping to find out which one they are planning to use.

According to kellymom, some are better than others and for nursing there are some in category L2 (ok) but for pregnancy the risk cannot be ruled out.

Any opinions out there?

I personally wouldn't be too concerned about it. Maybe mention to your doctor there's a chance you could be pregnant before she gives you anything.

I wouldn't think it's a problem since the biggest dose is local to the injection site and then it is metabolized pretty quickly.

Here is some information from the Illinois Teratogen Information Service:

Local Anesthetics

Because local anesthetics are used by topical application or injection, their systemic absorption is often limited. In situations where systemic absorption by the mother is virtually absent, no significant teratogenic effect would be expected regardless of the potential teratogenic activity of the agent. The Collaborative Perinatal Project is the primary source of epidemiological data on possible teratogenic effects of local anesthetic agents. In addition to the previously discussed limitations, this study does not distinguish medicaitons by route of exposure. Therefore, topical application, local injection, regional infiltration and spinal infusion are all considered together. This study evaluated the possible teratogenicity of several local anesthetic agents including procaine, lidocaine, mepivacaine, benzocaine, propoxycaine, and tetracaine. Based on the limited information available, it seems unlikely that these topical agents are associated with a high risk of teratogenic effects in humans (Friedman, 1988).

You could try looking up the Friedman study on PubMed.  I would also recommend contacting other pregnancy/breastfeeding teratogen services for more information like InfantRisk: http://www.infantrisk.com/.   I agree about letting your care provider know- probably before you go in (leave a message for the doctor)- in case they have more information.
