So,tell me about this s&s business. (Update) Mother nature has a twisted sense of humor!!

So get this. I was on bed rest until thursday, because my midwife saw that I was dilated before 37 weeks and thought I might go early. (I always dilate early...this is nothing new.)

Up until thursday (well, wed at midnight) if my baby were to be born, she would be considered preterm. But thursday morning, just hours into finally being 37 weeks, I was offered a stretch and sweep! What the heck?

I went for an ultrasound on friday though, which confirmed that I am completely efaced/dilated. This is miserable. I've never been fully dilated before starting "active" labour before. I feel like i'm about to drop a watermelon at any given moment....a ticking time bomb.

I see my midwife tomorrow...Im contemplating letting her do this s&s. I've never had it done though so i'm not sure what to expect.
In the last two days ive done the double breast pump hoping that might start something, and red rasberry leaf tea....(and sex.Geez, that was...fun?)
I might try the primrose oil tonight...(but if that's for ripening the cervix, I think we're already there.)

Anyone have any ideas? Should I go for the stretch and sweep?

.....I can't believe you're sitting around fully dilated........can I say I am more than a little jealous??  Although I can imagine how frustrating and uncomfortable it must be

It does seem rather arbitrary, doesn't it?  Like - one minute you're pre-term and when the clock ticks over you're good to go...

I would worry about a s&s breaking your membrane without starting labour...and then you're stuck with a timeline....

I don't know if membrane rupture is a particular risk, but where the cervix is already open, maybe it's a bigger risk than for those done with a closed cervix?

So yeah, none of that was very helpful..... hugs and labour wishes to you!!

I went into labour after a s&s on my due date with my second... I'm not sure how much of that was the s&s and how much was just me going into labour but I was 2 weeks over with my first and didn't expect to go that soon with my son!!

I was 38 weeks yesterday and I am going to ask my doctor to do a s&s Tuesday at my appt if I'm dilated enough. I'm SO ready for this baby to be born.

If it were me I would go for it, maybe it will be all your body needs to get things going!

From my understanding breaking the water before labour starts is a risk of the stretch and sweep, though in your case it would be just a sweep I'm pretty sure.  I'm fairly certain that the stretch part refers to the cervix....

Good luck!  Hope you have that baby soon!

I didn't have any idea that could happen. I don't have any advice, I'm just completely amazed.

What's the difference between a stretch and sweep and just checking the cervix for dilation?

Wow, are you just waddling around?

waddling is exactly what i'm doing!  It's reaaaaally uncomfortable.
I did this with my first two, but I was never completely dilated before active labour...but I was around 7 or 8. Those extra two cm make a huge difference in discomfort :S

I keep getting contractions, on again and off again, but nothing very regular. I haven't been able to sleep for about 5 days now, for more than an hour at a time. (Training for baby maybe?)

Yes, it probably would just be a sweep now, nothing left to stretch. (other than my patience!!) I don' t know if the risk of breaking my water is a risk at this point...it wouldn't be ideal, but goodness, I don't know how long I can go like this without it breaking on it's own anyway!

With my first two boys though, it didn't break until they were crowning...which terrifies me-because i didn't really realize it was "TIME" until that happened. This means that I could be just about anywhere when this baby is born. I'm scared to leave the house!

There are a lot of literary references and superstitions about people who were "born in the caul"--in their intact amniotic sac. Like, can't drown, will be very wise, are royalty, etc. So...

I've heard of that. Well...both my kids are fearless in water...haha.

Ok, you're a super waddling lady who is scared to leave the house and the baby is practically crowning....I'd be going for the S&S and not worrying about water breakage I guess!!!  lol.gif

I will! Not sure exactly when they're coming, they're in a meeting right now. I hope to hear back from them soon though-dh didn't go to work today because he's afraid it might happen while he's gone, if they do the s&s. Kinda feel like i'm living in limbo!

And he's more antsy than I am.....go figure :S

Good luck, lady! I didn't know that was possible either. Your labors must go pretty quickly?

frighteningly quickly. I have an empty birth tub set up in my living room though, so I hope this one is a little more normal. A girl can dream, right?

The midwives have come and gone-my cervix has gone from being fully dilated, back to 2 cm!! I didn't end up doing the S&S, clearly she just isn't ready. (or i'm not...) Either way, no baby tonight.
Im not dissapointed, if it's not time, it's not time. I'm completely weirded out though.

You have a good attitude. I was JUST thinking before I checked this board that I was jealous of you for dilating without knowing it (other than the waddle.) Does this mean that you can walk around now?

I could walk around before-it just sucked. And it still does-I'm not sure why. Even though i've gone down, I sure as heck don't feel like it! Maybe my cervix has just had too much action lately.lol
