Is it legal for collection agencies to call someone at work?

One of our employees must have given our office number as his phone number for a credit company and now a collection agent is calling here ALL THE TIME.  Everytime she calls, the office manager makes it clear that this in a business, the employee does not work in the office but out in the field and to not call again.

This has gone on long enough and now I need to call this agency back and put a stop to the constant calling. 

I thought it was illegal for bill collectors to call people at work.  Anyone know anything about this?

It is legal to call at work but only once a day. They are supposed to respect a request to not call anymore though. You can look up the FDCPA - Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

If it's the only number they have for him, they'll keep calling. It's not illegal if he gave the number to the company as one of his primary numbers. It's only illegal to call a cell phone if they've been told they don't have permission to call it. Do you have a better number they could reach him at? I forget what that rules are, but I think if you give them another number they might try that one and if they see it's a better way to reach him, they might back off calling the office. Or maybe he'll actually tell them that's not a good number. If I remember correctly, they can't remove the number from his account unless he asks them to, which sucks.

He doesn't have a land line at home, only a company cell phone.  Even so, the cell would be a better number and I will give that to the agency.

He needs to send them a letter in writing requesting that they only contact him by mail and it needs to be sent certified return receipt requested, that is the only way to get them to stop calling. Asking them not to call by phone is not enough, so he needs to take that action.
