I'm 33w and my baby is still flipping around.  Just when I think she's going to stay vertex, she'll turn breech for a day or two.  I suspect that she still has plenty of room, so I'm trying not to be concerned.

I'm so confused by my baby's position today, it's frustrating the heck out of me. I know it shouldn't matter but my curiosity is killing me, lol. I've looked at belly mapping pictures at Spinning Babies and I've tried lying in every position to try discerning which parts of her body I'm feeling. She hadn't moved locations much in months and then all of a sudden today she completely changed positions from my right to my left and back to my right side again. It felt so weird and I saw lumps moving across my belly! All I know now is that she's for sure camped out on my right side and wiggling a bunch, but now I can't figure out if she's head down or up, or what are kicks or hand movements. Oy. I'm so in touch with anything ever going on inside my body, so to not have a grasp on THESE sort of sensations is annoying! Just like with BH contractions... I'm still not sure when I feel them or not. Bleh.

I have no idea what position my baby is in! I had ultrasounds at 28 weeks and 32 weeks and both times he/she was head down. Right now though I'm feeling something really low (like right above the top of my right leg way down low in my pelvis) and right under my right boob (never felt that particular one til Saturday night). It's kind of uncomfortable. I'm hoping the lower one is a hand but I keep getting scared baby's head is to the left and legs are stretched out, one high and one low. I don't think the baby's legs would be able to stretch that far apart. Thank God I have an appointment tomorrow; I'm hoping my midwife can "feel" the baby's position. If not I may have to have one more ultrasound...

There should be no reason that you NEED an ultrasound to figure out the baby's position.  My midwives have always been able to tell.  Once you know what you're feeling for, it's pretty easy.  If you're getting hiccups near the bottom and kicks near the top, the baby is probably head down.  I hardly feel any kicks at all when my baby has turned breech.

If you're feeling movement down low it's an arm.  That thing under your ribs is the butt.  Baby is 17 inches long (give or take depending what week you are) so s/he is tucked up either knee to chest or feet to head (yes, really) so you'll probably be feeling kicks to the sides or not at all because the feet might be toward your back.  Baby is wayyyy too big to be standing up in the womb.  I feel a lot more movement down low b/c of elbows and hands.  I hardly feel kicks to the side, since baby is usually facing back toward my spine so his legs would be kicking toward my back.  If you know where your placenta is based on the u/s you have had then you'll know where there is a "dead zone" of movement.  My placenta is anterior (at my back) so I can feel everything up front and on the sides, while some women's placenta is in the front so they feel less movement in that area.

If you can palpate your abdomen and feel a large, smooth surface that's the back.  If it's all bumpy that's because baby is posterior (feet and hands to the front, spine toward your back).

You really shouldn't need another u/s, like Abra said.  I try to avoid unnecessary u/s anyway but your MW should really be able to tell.

My midwife is pretty sure the baby is breech as of today. She asked how I was feeling and I told her something really hard and bony was wedged against my ribs since Saturday but I'm feeling "kicks" high, low, and to both sides. She measured my uterus. I've been one week ahead for the longest time and today I was three weeks ahead. She felt around and listened to the heartbeat and she thinks it's the head that is wedged against my ribs. She recommended finding a chiropractor to do the Webster technique.

So I had a feeling something was up and baby was not in the same position it had been just because since Saturday I just felt different but I was not expecting the baby to be breech.

Unfortunately I'm very overweight so I probably will need to have another ultrasound as I don't think my midwife can tell for sure by feeling.

I just tried frozen broccoli at the top of my uterus (as we did not have peas). Now I'm having uterine cramps. Fun.

I'm 33w3d and my baby is still flipping around on her own.  She just did a full somersault as I type this.  Yesterday she spent half the day in a transverse position.  I think that it's totally possible that your baby will flip back in it's own.

My midwives have told me I have a pendulous uterus. This means that my loosey goosey stomach muscles are still all stretched out from DD, so they don't tuck the uterus in all tight like other people might. This makes it roomier for baby to move around. Last week I was measuring 3 weeks bigger than I should. Oy.

I'll be 36 weeks on Monday, and baby can STILL easily make full somersaults. Since my last MW appointment, when he/she was finally vertex, I have most definitely felt feet in every area of my uterus possible. But now baby is back to being vertex.

I've stopped worrying about positioning. I have a mansion womb, apparently, baby can go wherever they want. winky.gif

I read somewhere that using a ring sling around the belly can help tip the baby into the uterus a bit better if there's lots of room.

Me too!  So far I don't feel like I'm carrying too far forward, but I might need to try this trick towards the end if baby is tipping forward and not putting pressure on my cervix ;-)

Just had my 32 week mw appointment and baby is head down and engaged!  Yay!  She said unless I go jumping on a trampoline or something, baby will stay put.  lol.gif  I guess that means that all s/he can do is stretch out her/his arms and legs, which explains why I haven't been getting those full sweeping movements from one side to the other that I had with my previous two.   Anyone know if early engagement tends to lead to earlier labor or if it doesn't really make a difference?   I would assume the latter, I guess.

Jaimee - My midwife told me that early engagement doesn't mean baby will come sooner. I had asked her the same thing. Wishful thinking! lol

I figured as much, but I'm also surprised b/c usually with subsequent pregnancies, baby doesn't engage until much closer to or during labor.

I was told my baby was engaged as of Wednesday (she flipped from breech on tuesday) and BOY could I feel it!  I'm wondering though, why if she is engaged she can still move her limbs all over, from side to side.  It just doesn't seem right.

All I know is that I can for sure feel her giant head moving around in my vagina.  Thank you, weakened pelvis floor muscles.

That's just the thing... engagement happens earlier in first time moms b/c the muscles are not yet stretched out and therefore keep the baby squeezed in and positioned well.  But my muscles are not holding anything in well, so I'm wondering how that happened...

But great news for your Ash!  You were so worried about baby's position if you went early!

oh no! I'm 36 wks 2 days and just discovered at my midwife home visit this morning that baby is breech. For as long as position has been palpated, baby has been head down. I think the flip must have just happened within the last few days (maybe while I was sleeping, because I wasn't aware of any especially strong or flippy movements).

I will start laying inverted a few times a day, and am looking into acupuncture. But more than *what to do* I am hoping that some of you can reassure me that there's still some flipping-back-around time left.

Anyone else have a baby who suddenly flipped breech at this late stage in the game? I've never experienced this with my other pregnancies, and now I'm worried.

There is absolutely still time!  Babies still flip just prior to birth, but especially prior to 38 weeks.  I suggest moxibustion instead of acupuncture (though usually it is an acupuncturist that does moxi).  A good practitioner will teach your partner how to do it, so bring them along, and send you home with a stick of moxi to use again if baby flips back.  There is also Webster chiro you could look into.  Some of those practitioners will even do home visits once you go into labor if  baby still needs turning or adjustment.

Oh, this is a good idea. I was starting to get a little concerned about that because I can feel fetal movements on the OUTSIDE of my pubic bone. That just seems so wrong. Though DD didn't engage until after my water broke (and still was only at like +2 or something) and it all worked out.

One benefit to carrying so far forward though is that I have never felt a kick to the ribs, and I don't get that squashy can't-breathe, can't-eat feeling. I could do without the big post-partum tummy though, and the backaches.

Hey, Ash, I remember you  mentioning something before about feeling as though the baby was just going to fall out.  Lately, when I stand up, I get that feeling in the cervix/vaginal area that something is in there.  It's the same feeling I have when a tampon or my diva cup is not positioned well and it feels like it's coming out (which it is).  Seriously, it feels like the baby is going to fall out.  Is that because it's engaged and just pushing on the cervix?  Why does it feel like it's in the vagina?  Am I feeling my cervix touching in the inside of the vaginal canal?  Any ideas?
