Baby's position? - Page 2

On Friday's appointment, the MWs both concluded that baby is still across my belly, with his/her spine up, probably with the head on my left side.  We had lots of movement down low that felt like limbs.  We think the movements I've been feeling higher up are just the baby flipping over and wiggling arms/legs up higher in my belly.  My uterus and the babe are growing, so the movements are just reaching higher.  We have plenty of time for the babe to move into position, so I'm just enjoying having less pressure high and low for now.  (Once in a while, I swear this babe stomps directly on my bladder, though.)

I'm with an OB and a maternal fetal doc right now due to some odd complications halfway through, and neither of them palpate.  Crazy, I know.  I learned some very basic hands-on palpation techniques in a To Labour doula class and so far I've been spot-on.  I understand why a doc/midwife wouldn't want to put much stock in baby positions before 32 or so weeks, but now that we are all getting closer I imagine we'll get more info on position from our care providers.

At my appointment on Friday, the MW confirmed that baby is head down, he just hasn't picked a side to settle into yet. He actually switched sides on her while she was palpating my belly. She felt around to confirm that he was head down, then she turned to grab the doppler and when she started looking for the heartbeat he had rolled over so she couldn't find the HB in the spot she thought she would. The baby is by far more active than DD ever was in utero. It's kind of fun, but also kind of annoying. DD never hit or kicked my bladder, she just hung out with her butt in my ribs which wasn't too bad. This one is all over the place. I'll feel him pushing on my bladder and then I'll have a butt in my ribs a few seconds later. I hope he settles down and picks a spot soon.

My MW said the position didn't matter at this point (last appt was 32 weeks) because they still flip/turn so often.

My OB started checking at 35 weeks, but she's still not 100% confident baby is head down (Did I mention she's new and a little nervous?...lol) even though we are confident she is. I'll be 37w on Thursday, and just in the last few days I've noticed a definite decrease in position changing. Like with Caitlin, baby girl has been head down since about 32 weeks (probably before, but that's when I started feeling sure), but she moves her bum back and forth from the left to right side daily. Now this week, she's staying pretty still comparitively.

Yeah, I'm reading conflicting info on that.  I wasn't going to worry until 35 weeks, but my Mayo Clinic book said between 33 and 34 weeks is when they start to settle and "are likely in the position they will be in for birth".  Obviously there's still lots of time for them to move, but if baby is settling in a good position now ... well I might stop doing inversions during yoga *sad face*.  And if it wasn't, I might start being proactive with means of getting the baby to move.

Anyway, I had a 33 week appointment yesterday and my OB humored me (he doesn't usually check until 35 weeks) and baby was head down, L-shaped, on my right.  It spends most of its time facing out on my right side I think, digging away at the outside of my uterus.  They have fingernails now right?  I think he must be making some progress.

Yup, fingernails that extend to the end of the fingertips. It seems like an exaggeration, but I'm fairly sure baby girl keeps swiping hers against my cervix. Ouch.

I'm pretty sure Blobby has been pinching me in the side. OUCH!

I wonder if it depends on the size, too.  Bigger babies don't have much room/choice earlier.

I have 2 babies in there and they both changed position frequently from 31 weeks to 36 weeks.  I think once a baby is engaged in the pelvis the chance of flipping is significant lower though.

Does it feel different if the baby's butt or head is down? Like, someone said when the head is engaged it feels like a watermelon down there or something, lol, does it feel like that if a baby is butt-down?

Also is it possible for her to be head down and then move around again, then go back? Because the other day I felt an odd pressure/fullness in my pelvis and my bladder capacity dropped, but after a day that went away. Tonight I feel the pressure/fullness in my pelvis again, and it's sort of painful down there to walk. I wasn't sure if that was the baby, or just the overtired muscles.

I finally got my midwife to check at 33 weeks and baby was breech, which is pretty consistent with what I've felt for a while: kicks down low, hiccups and heartbeat on the upper left side.  I've been doing the full court press (inversions, acupuncture, moxibustion, chiropractic, massage, Mayan abdominal massage, flashlight, cold peas, Bach's Brandenburg concertos 1-4, hypnobabies flip CD) for the last two weeks and no luck so far.  I have an appointment Thursday (I'll be 35w5d).  We'll see what's up next.

I went to my Dr last week (@ 35 weeks), and she was pretty sure the baby wasn't head down yet.  I thought the baby was still laying sideways for the most part too.  She wasn't worried, and said that with a third pregnancy (which mine is) that the baby has more room to move around later.

The day after the Dr apt, I think the baby moved, and seems to be head down ever since.  My husband thinks that all our talk of breech convinced him/ her to move:)  I guess I'll get confirmation next week @ my 37 week check up!  I haven't tried anything to move the baby either, although I do have another chiro apt the day after my Dr apt, which might come in handy
