Hello,

I'm looking for thoughtful stories to read @ nighttime to my little love bug. Any suggestions? Any favorites?

Thank you :)

Not totally sure what u mean by thoughtful, with a nice moral? My daughter LOVED jillian jiggs books at that age..not thoughtful though, the balloon tree is good too

My son devoured Aesop's Fables at that age.  And they were mercifully short, plus gave us time to chat about the moral of the story.  ;)

I love this list of top 10 children's books and then the author wrote a second list of more great children's books.  I get about 5 from the library at a time and my 4yo son loves each one.  Happy reading! :)

Winne the Pooh (the original stories) are gentle and fun.

We love Astrid Lindgren, chapter books. Each chapter is closed in itself and there are sooo many.

DD loves Roald Dahl as well, which I found rather interesting...but we only started that when she was nearly five. she was not afraid at all of  the childeating giants ...

I've been reading the entire Milly Molly Mandy series of short stories to my kids (all 3 of my youngest) for a while now.  They all love them, boys and girls alike.  The stories are short, sweet, and never upsetting or worrying.

This is a great list of books for preschool children. It includes lots of classics!

We just read A Mouse Called Wolf by Dick King-Smith, who also wrote Babe.  It was a really sweet story with rich vocabulary.  The author wrote a bunch of books and I'm looking forward to reading more of them.

We read a ton of stories each night.  Recently we've been especially loving the collection of stories in  The Story Tree with classic tales retold by Hugh Lupton.  We've also been doing chapter books for a few months and that's been really great.  The big hits for her were Mary Poppins by T.L. Travers, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Raold Dahl and right now we're reading Henry Huggins by Beverly Cleary.

We also love the Frances books as well as Frog and Toad

Run to the library and check out Jim Trelease's The Read-Aloud Handbook.  It has incredible suggestions for books!

We have been in love with Robert McCloskey books for some time now - Time of Wonder, One Morning in Maine, Lentil, Blueberries for Sal, Make Way for Ducklings.  Also, Virginia Lee Burton's Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel, The Little House are superb.  I enjoy reading The Storm Book by Charlotte Zolotow - my son liked it better when he was three or so, though (he's four now).

Here's a list of great authors:  http://simplemom.net/10-great-authors-in-childrens-literature/
