Anybody else have a child and then not be able to drink milk?

I am cross-posting this here since the people most likely to have this problem have kids around this age...mods, move if you must...

I have never had a problem with milk (though my mom did).  I am 41 and had my second child when I was 39.  I never was a big milk drinker, but after I had DS2, I have very marked tummy/bathroom problems if I drink even a couple of ounces.  Not to be gross, but I get gas, bloating, and have a couple of trips to the bathroom in a day instead of just one.  Is this lactose intolerance, or an allergy to milk protein?  Is there a difference?

And, why?  What gives?

I have a thread around here somewhere about how my random hives have returned after 20 yrs of remission. Also - I have gotten allergic to cherries, shell-fish and I suspect chocolate since much after my delivery (or maybe I discovered it much after my delivery since the reactions are very mild and I didn't eat many cherries or shell-fish immediately post-partum).

So yes I think it is possible to get allergic to things after the birth of a child. While researching for reasons of my hives - I feel I came across other testimonies bearing this out (right on this forum).

Am sorry....for you and for myself too. I truly hate this.

I also have a skin condition that I've had since I was a teen that got twice as bad after I had my second child.  I understand that pregnancy is an immune-suppressed state, but why the heck would it make things worse after birth and/or cause new problems?  What a bummer.

I am sorry that you, too, got the lousy hives and allergies after you had a baby.  I mean, of course it's worth it and all...but it still is no good greensad.gif

I suddenly became lactose intolerant at 21, then got pregnant very soon after discovering what the problem was and it seemed to get worse, I couldn't tolerate any dairy at all, even in breads. After birth, I could handle a lot more but was still lactose intolerant. This pregnancy (I am now 25) I can pretty much have regular milk in my coffee and be fine!! So yes, I think it must be possible to become allergic or intolerant to things during or after pregnancy, I definitely have experienced it.

As for, which do you have, it sounds like lactose intolerance to me, which usually shows its symptoms primarily through gastro-intestinal problems, which is what I have. You can get tested at the Dr to be sure though.

I actually started drinking milk again when I became pregnant- and still drink it now (still lactating). but for years before that, while I do fine with it, I preferred soy milk- milk itself just didn't appeal to me. then when I got pregnant it was like- all I wanted to do was drink milk! Now I drink it almost every day. Maybe when I stop lactating I will not crave it this much but I guess my expereicne is different than yours!

Are you drinking pasturized or raw milk? If you're drinking pasturized you're probably having trouble with the lactose and casein, which is all that is left after pasturization. If you drink raw milk from a grass fed source, you will probably not have any issues. All of the prebiotics, probiotics and digestive enzymes are still in tact. Also, the milk is healthier from healthier cattle and basic care is actually taken care of (cleanliness etc). It goes straight from a healthy cow to a giant cooler and then to you. If you can get your hands on some, I would say to try it. I have no idea where you are located, but if you need help locating some good raw dairy just pm me. good luck!!!
PS Lots of people who are lactose intolerant to "regular" dairy have no issues at all with raw dairy....you can oftentimes get raw cheese at Trader Joe's btw if there's one near you.
