My 15 month old daughter usually goes to bed around 9 and wakes up at 7. We're still doing two naps.
Last night she went to bed at 10 and woke up at 5:30. UGH!
I loved our schedule when it was like that. I miss late mornings, especially when it's raining.
OP--your MIL and mine must compare notes. I learned early on to avoid any mention to her of our son's specific wake/sleep times or even directly answer "Does he STTN?" I have a handful of auto-responses for her now regarding his sleep:
"He sleeps great."
"He does fine."
She always tells me that her children always slept 12-13 hours per night. Maybe it's true, maybe her memories have faded. When I'm in a bad mood, I imagine it's the latter, but I really don't know, of course.
The truth? Our 18 month old typically goes down between 9 and 10 and wakes around 7. He takes one nap a day, usually between an hour and two. He still nurses many times during the night, even if it's just for a few minutes. It's fair to say I'm awakened a half-dozen times a night. It sucks and I'm exhausted, but that's what we are dealing with and I am not willing to give up co-sleeping or nursing. So be it.
I am glad to see these responses because I have worried that my DD doesn't get enough sleep. Between night sleep and a nap she sleeps about 12 hours per day on a good day. I was under the impression that most kids sleep 12 hours per night plus a nap. She seems well rested, but I still worried she didn't sleep enough. But she seems on par with a lot of kids here.
My almost-4yo goes to bed between 7-8p and wakes up between 6-8. The 16mo, however, is another (tragic, for me, anyway) story: He goes to bed at 7 every night and is always up between 5-6a, no matter what. We've tried everything, and it's just like he's wired to wake up then. Uf.
My boys are all up until about 10-11pm (they are 7, 3 and 2), and they wake up 9am. My 2yo takes a 2 hour nap during the day.
When my oldest was in public school, bed time was much earlier, but we homeschool now, and the boys like to stay up so they have some time with their daddy. (He works 2 jobs, and isn't usually home until 9:30pm.)
Bedtime is 7:00-7:30 at the latest, and our 26 mos old ds often wakes @ 5:00 am, recently he had a few days when he woke at 4:30, but 6:00 would be on the late side for him. Bummer for mama & dada!
Sounds like your kids get plenty of sleep and 8:30 is not early! What planet is your MIL from? ;)
ETA: naptime is after lunch and is an hour and a half usually, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter.
My 9 yo goes to bed at 8 and wakes up between 6-7 every day, including weekends
My 14 mo old goes to bed around 7:30 and wakes up usually between 6:30-7:15 every day
i know a lot of people who keep their kids up later, and have them sleep in later. We're more of a farmer schedule around here.
sleeping in until 8 is late! don't worry about it! i think maybe mil just wants to sleep in longer when they stay over?! :)
My DS is 26 months and most nights hits the hay around 9-10pm. We also co-sleep and nurse as well. He wakes a couple times in the night to nurse and up around 7-8am. Takes about a 1.5-2 hour nap mid afternoon.
I totally relate to hearing "he should sleep 10-12 hrs". For a long time I thought I was doing something wrong. Took a deep breath and can see my kiddo is well rested and happy.
Totally sounds like something a MIL would say! I think that sleep schedule sounds awesome for all of your kids! A 6 year old getting 13-14 hours of sleep is a.maz.ing.
expecting 14 hrs of sleeps (and MORE!) sounds crazy too me, my 2 year old does not sleep that much in 24hrs.
He goes to bed between 8.30-9.30 wakes up between 6.30-7.30 and naps (not always) 30-60min once during the day.
My 2 year old goes to bed between 8 and 9pm, but sometimes (like last night) he stays up talking to himself or playing quietly until 10pm (an hour after I put him in bed). Typically, he wakes up between 7 and 8:30am. On most days, he'll also sleep 2-3hours in the afternoon.
My 3 year old runs almost exactly this same schedule, except that some days her "nap" is 1.5 hours of quiet time in her room. Other days it is 3 hours of hard sleep.
