One year old rarely has solid poop, loses sleep at night from tummy aches and gas, help!

My son has rarely had a really solid poop in his life, he's 13 months now. Most of the time they are goopy messes...

He is still breastfed and eats around 3 small meals a day. For example : yogurt and fruit or scrambled eggs for breakfast, fruit/veggies and chicken for lunch, fish/chicken and veggies for dinner.

His stomach always bothers him at night, it's rare that he sleeps through the night without tummy aches and I can hear his tummy gurgling. Is this normal? I'm getting him some probiotics soon in hopes that will help. Any other tips?

No, it's definitely not normal for him to have an upset stomach all the time. The first thing which springs to mind is a food intolerance. Have you tried any elimination diets at all? I assume you've taken him to your doctor to rule out any serious GI issue (not that food intolerance isn't serious). I would suggest going back and discussing possible food intolerance.

Maybe in the meantime you could start journaling his and your diet (everything you both eat) and his symptoms to see if any patterns emerge.

All the best, I hope you can find some answers for your poor little man soon.

Do you remember when the stomach upsets at night first started?  If it was after you started feeding him solids, then he's more than likely allergic to something you feed him.  If it's always been the case, then he could be allergic to something you eat through your breast milk or he has a serious GI issue.

Do you ever give him anything with gluten?  The first thought that sprang to mind when I read your post was celiac disease: http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/allergies/celiac_disease.html#

It definitely doesn't sound normal, but I can't tell for certain what it could be from what you've written.  Babies who eat a good amount of solids (like yours) should have solid poop, very rarely runny/goopy poop.  Tummy aches every night is also a sign that he's allergic to something he's eating.  I would eliminate any dairy or gluten, both from his diet and yours and see if that helps.  Also, eggs are said to be THE most common food allergy in children, so I highly recommend eliminating that as well.  If you take him to a pediatrician, be prepared for them probably wanting to do a blood test.

the first thing that came in to my head was dairy intolerence! try eliminating it and see if that changes things!!

My 14-month-old only recently started having solid poops when we added some iron (Floradix) to his diet because of anemia.  We had already eliminated foods that caused other issues a while before.
