Ugh, fruit flies in my kombucha. Is it salvagable?

We do continuous brew and I don't have a backup scoby.I hadn't checked on it in a few weeks. I had like 10 layers of cheesecloth rubber banded over the lid, which had worked fine all summer. I went to feed it today and there are fruit flies all over in it.

If I found bugs in something else I'd just boil it if I needed to still consume it, but obviously that wouldn't work here. I try to tell myself that people eat bugs all over the world, but it still icks me out, but also make me wonder if it's really not too healthy for us anymore. Can a little bit still be used to start a new batch?

You will need to start over.

Best thing to use is either a coffee filter or a tea towel with a rubber band to prevent future infestations.

I use a tea towel & had about 8 fruit flies on top the other day but none got in.
