Homebirth supplies to have on hand...mesh panties?

My midwife does a fairly complete birth kit, but I'm wondering what items were really useful to you if you had a previous home birth? I know I want to get my hands on some of those hospital style disposable mesh panties, just trying to find a cheap source...any ideas?

I get mine here because I'm slightly addicted to them after giving birth..

inhishands.com should have some mesh panties. I have 3 pairs that went unworn from when my sister had her daughter, so I'm glad I don't have to worry about that. lol I'm only using the bare essentials. Shower curtain liner, flat sheet, bulb syringe, something to clamp cord in 2 places and something to cut the cord. And in our case, we need sterile gloves.

Am I the only person who didn't like the mesh panties?!  I expected to love them.  I thought they were ill-fitting, though.  Is it normal for them to be SUPER stretchy (I was in hospital, so thought maybe it was a one-size fits all deal...)

They are one size fits all and then there are the plus size ones. I LOVE mesh panties and honestly can't wait to wear them and glad I have three pairs instead of one or two. lol

I want to love them!  LOL   Maybe this time :-)

Okay, I looked at that link up there and I do NOT think those were the mesh panties that I had!  Mine were like this (random blog that came up on google image search) http://airmansbaby.blogspot.com/2010/01/my-first-trip-to-l-or-mesh-panty.html

They were REALLY loose fishnet, not much elastic to speak of.  I'm fairly small (size 4) even right after giving birth, so they were NOT cutting it.  I wore them over my regular undies because the pad was too heavy to be held up by just the mesh undies.  Even still, I felt like everything would slip off at any second.  It was all shifting around and wasn't really holding the pad in place.  Oye.

They also come in different varieties of mesh. The first time I wore them when my son was born, I HATED them because the mesh was too big. But with my daughter, they were so comfy and snuggly. And the ones my sister has given me look comfy and are soft. biggrinbounce.gif

I ordered my home birth supplies through EverythingBirth.com under my midwife's birth kit. My kit has mesh briefs. This is my first time, so I don't know how they fit or how well liked they are. They look like the same ones that Breed210 noted above from the Birthwithlove.com website.

J, I didn't like the mesh panties either.  They fit fine, but I didn't really understand the need.  The second time around I just used my maternity panties until my stomach shrunk enough to put on some stretchy regular panties.

Really most mw's will give you a more than comprehensive list and I didn't have a need for most of it.  We used the shower curtain liner for the floor and an old vinyl table cloth for the bed.  I think I used all of two towels- one when I got out of the pool and one when I took a shower.  Some blankets to wrap baby in and a heating pad for when the mw did the nb exam.  A bowl for the placenta and later freezer bags for it.   I opted for 1 package of disposable maxi pads for the first two days and then I switched to cloth- I'll do the same this time b/c I don't want to risk running out of cloth during those first two days and I don't have plans to make or buy more.  We used hydrogen peroxide to soak the laundry and some vinegar to clean up.  For the pool we did have more supplies like the drinking water quality hose, faucet adapter, submergeable pump, tarp, and disposable (generic) liner.  I really think that was it.

I hate the mesh panties, too. I just wore old panties that I had around the house last time. I have a pair of mesh panties from the birth stuff that a friend gave me, but I will not be using them.

I didn't order Afterease last time, and I regretted it. The after pains were so terrible every time I nursed! They're supposed to get worse with each baby, too, so I'm not doing without it this time. I'm also going to go ahead and have a bottle of stool softeners. I tore terribly last time, and the midwives sent my mom out within an hour of the birth to get some. One of the MWs looked at me very seriously and told me to take them every 2 hours until my perineum felt better. I ate those things like candy, and never had any trouble, even with all the stitches.

I had horrible after pains with my 2nd and they doubled me over. I was sobbing, asking the nurse for a painkiller. I think it was the pitocin they had me on during labor that made it so bad. I'd never had pain that bad, ever. Labor was a breeze compared to that.

Really?  Oh man.  I too have heard they get worse each time (I actually just found that out recently, and was surprised.)  With DS1 I remember them being pretty painful.  Not looking forward to it again this time- especially since it's mostly when nursing, which should be this amazing  time of bonding and I just remember sitting there taking deep breaths and wincing!

Oh yeah - labor was nothing compared to the afterpains. Every time I sat and nursed the baby for the first few days I thought I would die. I had some after my first, but she was in the NICU and I was pumping not nursing directly. I think that, coupled with the fact that it was my first, made it not so bad. It was awful last time, though.

oooooh man that sucks.  I'm getting Afterease this time like a pp mentioned.  My MW says it's really great stuff and helps for cramps during monthly cycles as well.

I had ZERO afterpains with my first. Totally didn't expect to be in worse pain than what labor was on the 2nd go 'round. We'll see how this one is. I have a couple low dose Roxicet tablets from an injury DH had a while ago that I'll save in case I have those same pains. Also, can you get this Afterease stuff anywhere?

I'd think Afterease would only be at more holistic stores.  It's an herbal tincture.  You can order online, too.

I feel very lucky as I did not have afterpains with either of my babies.  FX it stays that way!

I think I might just get some cheap hanes granny panties that I can throw away if I need to. Seems like the cheaper option anyway. :) My midwife supposedly has an amazing after pains tincture and she sells it online, if anyone is interested (no personal experience, but the women in my ICAN group swear by it). http://stores.homestead.com/CoyotesNaturalMedicine/-strse-9/After-Pain-Tincture/Detail.bok

I've never looked locally, but inhishands.com has it. I think they charge $8.50 for it.
