This is so not working and I NEED sleep!

DD is 5 months old and has been kind of a difficult sleeper from the start and it has just gotten worse. It takes this whole big production to get her to sleep - turn the bassinet vibration on, put wave sounds on for white noise, and rock the bassinet or pat her back. Even with all that it takes her forever! We know she's sleepy because she's just fallen asleep while nursing or being held, but she is not happy about it! We've tried putting her down for a nap before she becomes tired enough to fall asleep nursing, but she freaks out. The only place she'll sleep consistently is on DH's lap and that means he can't even get up to pee because she wakes up.

I had intended to cosleep, but she's ended up in the bassinet because she will. not. sleep. if she is beside me. From the day she was born she wants to marathon-nurse all night long. She has literally nursed for 4-5 hours at a stretch. If I unlatch her, she screams and kicks or claws at me. She'll at least sleep a bit in the bassinet. But she's about to outgrow it now and I don't know what we're going to do. Since she won't cosleep we're going to try side-carring a crib or maybe freestanding if she sleeps better that way, but it won't have the vibration or the rocking we use now.

It's 7am and I haven't slept. DH and I have been trading off every hour and DD hasn't slept for more than 10 minutes at a stretch. This is the worst night we've had in a long time with her. This whole vibration-rock-pat thing can't keep happening, but we can't get her to sleep at all without it (and not long with it!). I don't know what else to do!

Oh mama--so rough! I can't offer much advice, just commiseration. I've got a marathon night nurser as well, although he's 17 months now. I remember at each stage thinking, "There's no way I can do this for another month! Something has to change!" but alas, here we are, still in the same sleep deprived state. :(

I wonder if there's any sort of vibrating pad you could put in a crib. Sounds like a crazy idea, but when you're desperate for sleep, anything goes!

Sorry I can't offer any solutions or suggestions. Hopefully things will gradually improve. Good luck and hang in there!

Little update - last night was better. DD woke up when I got home from work at 12:30am to nurse and was awake until about 2, then went to sleep no trouble and slept until 6. That's the longest she's slept in ages and it was awesome! After the 6am feed, she went right back to sleep with only a little fussing and she's asleep now an hour and a half later. I hope she stays that way for a while because I'm about to go back to bed!
