Protein Powder

Some of you ladies had mentioned using protein powder while you were pregnant. What kind did you use? Hubby bought some Boost powder that I've been using for chocolate milk or when I make a milk shake, but it only has 6g of protein in it. That doesn't seem like an added boost to me? I have another appt on Friday and I'll ask then, but I'm curious now! And very impatient! Thanks!!

I used Whole Foods 360 Whey Protein Powder. It's really, really good.

I used a whey powder.  It says 26g of protein on the label.  I need to find an alternative as we are going gluten/dairy free, and I'm not thrilled with soy either.  I like being able to throw some in a blender with frozen fruit for some extra protein and calories when the girls are being difficult and I'm feeling low.  Anyone know for sure their brand is gluten/dairy free and not too pricey?

Yeah, that.  I got the one that didn't have any added flavor.  You're right 6g of protein is not enough.

I'm crashing your forum...I lurk here sometimes cuz twins run in my family and I have a sense that when I get preggers it'll be twins...So anywho...I know that I'm a high protein kind of gal. Good to know before going into any pregnancy I spose...

I've been loving Olympian Labs Pea Protein. It actually tastes good and doesn't make me burp back funky protein powder taste like the rice one I tried last time. This Pea Protein has 25g/serving. I got it at my health food store. Oh and it's gluten, dairy, soy free. It has pea protein, xylitol, vanilla and stevia.

I made the most awesome smoothie w/it the other morn...frozen banana, frozen blueberries, applesauce, coconut oil, and whole vanilla yogurt eat.gif I could've eaten that all day long!

I've seen that Pea Protein at my health food store, it sounded interesting. I've also heard good things about hemp, but haven't tried either one.

I used whey when I was pregnant, Designer Whey brand (2 scoops=17g protein). Trader Joe's has their own version of it, if you have that store near you. I'm a vegetarian, but I drank 1 of those protein shakes per day, made sure that everything I ate was either vegetable or protein (or both), and snacked on nuts. I got 80-100mg of protein a day during the pregnancy, and averaged only 1 serving of soy per day.

After the babies were born, they ended up being severely intolerant of dairy, so I went vegan and used rice protein powder by Nutribiotic (2 scoops = 24g protein). I found that one at Whole Foods. It was gross and didn't dissolve well when I tried to stir it in. I would NOT recommend that one but it did the trick and really helped me be able to exclusively nursing them. If you have any soy in your diet I wouldn't suggest the soy-based powders, I think it's better to watch soy intake, but that's my own preference.

I don't have Trader Joe's or Whole Foods anywhere near me.  I live in the sticks!  But I appreciate the suggestions and will look for these brands online.  Thanks!  Prescottchels, your smoothie sounds so yummy!  I think I'm craving smoothie now. ;)

Got my protein powder last night, and made an almond milk/strawberry/banana shake this morning.  Delicious!  Really!  Had none of that weird after taste that a lot of the other powders I've tried have.  Thank you for the recommendation, prescottchels!

You're welcome love.gif

I ordered Bob's Red Mill whey protein powder (there's also a sweet whey, which doesn't have much protein).  We mixed it into smoothies that we then froze. I'd put them by the bed to drink at 2AM when I woke up starving.

That sounds delicious!  For me, it was Shaklee vanilla whey.  :)
