Not getting whole course?

With DD1, I (blindly) vaxed as scheduled til 9 mo. when I started doing research and decided to cease vaxing.  DD2 is completely unvaxed (and since she's 7 1/2 now when most diseases are less deadly, and she and DD1 have had chicken pox, I'm unlikely to consider vaxing DD2 for anything at this point--might just get her and DD1's titers checked and see if they have any immunity to Rubella, and consider MMR in the future--or at least explain to my DD's the problems that can arise with rubella if contracted during pregnancy, and let them decide what to do when they're a little older).  For DS, I'm re-thinking things and considering DTaP because I worry about Pertussis, and possibly Pc and/or HIB.  But I'm trying to work out a schedule, and I'm considering not doing the whole course of shots with any of these.  Has anyone else done this?  Do you still get partial protection if you don't do the whole series or is the whole series necessary to get enough of an immunological response? To what extent is a partial series of shots effective?

If you want the best protection you can get from a vaccine, then you need to complete the series.
