I have generally been more of a lurker than a poster on here, but when I first joined right after my son was born there was definitely more activity and information for more here. I used to be on here several times a day but when all the changes started happening I found myself coming back less and less. Now that I'm at a different stage in my life (SAHM with a toddler) I came back looking for advice and information again. Unfortunately, there has been a drastic drop in activity and it really makes sad.

where did all the uber crunch mama's go?

:(

is everyone on blogs now?  i miss the mdc that used to be.  it's way mainstream here now, and it really saddens me to see threads about how much mama's love using bleach, yknow?

i was offline for a long time, but i'm pregnant again now, and miss having an uber crunch community.

if everyone is on fb, where are they?  i use fb to keep up with my family, not to post about pregnancy issues, etc.  ewww.

i think that most forums have had a huge dropoff in numbers.  i checked on amity's forums and they're totally dead.

people are still online though, so where did they go?

Thread Starter

Before the format changed I was a paying member- paid a small fee to not see the ads- seems fair as MDC has to generate income somehow- so now I still get to be ad free when I log on. Just wanted to make sure people knew about that option- the ads would drive me away too.

I don't like the ads but I am so used to it that I don't even 'see' them. They don't affect load times for me either, maybe I just have a good connection? Also, you can install ad block plus in firefox (although I seem to remember this messing with the navigation of the site, in a minor but annoying way).

I don't know where else everyone has gone, besides maybe Trolls. Usually when I'm on here I'm working, so I'm just randomly checking threads while my files are downloading or something. I spend a small amount of time on FB and some time on Pinterest but that's about it, not on other forums or anything. And I agree that MDC has veered toward mainstream quite a bit & I'm just not getting dozens of great, thoughtful ideas & all like I used to when I started coming here. I keep meaning to stop posting altogether, but... let's just say I have an addictive personality & a hard time letting go!! (And not much else to do while my files are downloading!)

Why are things so slow? They took an easy-to-read and navigate site and "redesigned" it such that it is unattractive and physically painful to read, then made it blatantly commercial. There's no mystery here.

clap.gif Yes! And these are the same posters that I have BLOCKED. But they take over entire frikkin' threads all the time. irked.gif

[quote name="peainthepod" url=" Also, the combative snark is beyond boring and it's so tedious to read yet another thread that was interesting at first but quickly devolved into someone picking someone else's post apart word by word, finding excuses to be offended and start off-topic arguments.

I sense some of that is changing, though.....maybe I am too optimistic?

When they went moderation (or close) to moderation free it was like a free-for-all for awhile.  I think some people got a lot of stuff off their chest, and that may be good, but the going around in circles and infighting got old.  I know I slung some mud around bag.gif

I do think heavy modding slowly drove people away - but not modding at all drove people away as well, and fairly quickly.   I like moderate modding.

I've stopped posting as much for a bunch of reasons. One, most of the posters I really liked have left. A lot seemed to leave way back when the Current Events folder was closed. I really loved all of the debate on that forum, and it never really came back after it was closed. I think posters were too afraid to post anything controversial, so the conversations were just boring or non-existant. Others left or were blocked when the site was redesigned.

The new format also doesn't work well for me. I used to keep the site up during the day and just take a peek whenever I had a break. But since the redesign, just having the site open seems to cause problems for some of the web apps I need open, so Mothering had to go.

Also, I know some have complained about the increase in snarkiness, and that may be a problem on some threads, but I've actually been more turned off by the opposite - all of the requests of late for people to post support only has really put me off. I just don't see the point in posting on or following threads where everyone is just agreeing and offering hugs.

hmm...I just hit  a blank message with a "this user is in your block list" message. Since I don't have a block list, I clicked on it. So, how the heck did kama'aina mama get blocked on my log-in? I've only ever blocked one person here, and it was a long time ago, and she hasn't posted in at least two years. I certainly wouldn't have blocked kama'aina mama, even if I did block people, because I enjoy her posts, even when I disagree. How could I have blocked someone by accident?

I totally agree with peainthepod and other poster that talked about web design.

Just wanted to chime in w/ my 2 cents.

Also, the parenting way of thinking has become crunchy, green, call it whatever. That bought many not so crunchy more mainstream kind of people to the board, and that changed it over time. I do remember reading many posts where people were talking about non MDC kinds of topics, and it starting a huge snarky thread, which I hated.

That said, I do enjoy coming to TOA and getting to know everyone, with not so much traffic!!!

Kama'aina Mama! Haven't seen you in ages. (I suppose that's your point.)

I miss the political debates.  They were epic. I remember Marge of Arabia and Hilary Briss were active in that forum.   I know, the forum was too much work for the Mods.

I agree.  Some portions of the MDC type of lifestyle aren't novel anymore.

One more thought is that members outgrow MDC. Or, their kids grow up and mamas go back to work and don't come around so much.  I'm a bit ashamed  to say that I should be in that group, but like Storm Bride and Kathymuggle said, sometimes it's just hard to break those habits.

Is this mis written or are there significantly less people on MDC these days?

Significantly less.  I noticed at the bottom of the forums, it said there were 1500 current active users.  I remember when this use to be closer to 10,000.

The ads are over the top overwhelming and make the site look trashy. It's worse than a free porn site. I do have Adblock (for Chrome) and have tweaked it well enough so I don't see any of it anymore, but if I hadn't been here before the ads got so bad I would have clicked away instantly.

I used to pay for the $5 ad-free version, but they removed that option so Adblock it is...

Also I think the site is getting a bad reputation as being way over the top on some issues. Something about bleach curing AIDS? WTF?

The facebook integration thing is horrible too, and would have scared me off as a new member. I really can't imagine *anyone* who would want their mothering posts to appear on their Facebook wall. The whole idea is bigeyes.gif.

For me it's totally the format.  I've said over and over that they need to roll back to vbulliten.  I have to assume there is some contract that stops that because it's such an obvious step in the right direction, IMO.

Even right click to correct a spelling doesn't work here!  When the site changed I googled the people who did it and sure enough there are a ton of complaints from other forum owners.  The reply box sucks etc (ya think?).

Well, I never! hopmad.gif

Bingo!

I left because I boycott businesses and various media that sponsor hate. There were threads here and topics brought up on facebook that invited racist and homophobic discourse and then there was the Pat Robertson stuff.  I can't participate in that.

Kama'aina, have you offed any chickens lately? Done any readings?  orngbiggrin.gif

My readings are so confusing!  But we are actually due to harvest about 20 chickens in about 10 days, so who knows?  Maybe I'll finally get in touch with my inner auger!

I'm not ssh, but I came back to comment because I saw this thread mentioned on TWWS. The sentiments on this topic here are remarkably similar to those there.
