My DH and I are expecting our first in March, and have always planned on co-sleeping. I've been a nanny for 3.5 years, and co-slept with the boy I watch from the time he was 7 months old, so I'm comfortable with older infants-preschool age, but I'm a little bit nervous about co-sleeping with a newborn.
I have no idea what to expect in the first few months as far as my levels of exhaustion, and how alert I'll be, and I'm wondering if it might be useful to have an in-bed co-sleeper for the first few weeks/months, until we get used to having a wee one in the bed with us.
I've seen a few, like the First Years Close and Secure Sleeper, the Baby Delight Snuggle Nest, and the The Summer Infant Rest Assured Sleeper, but I have no idea if any of these are really safe, and if they will end up being useful, or just be in the way.
Does anyone have experience using any of these products (or any product like them)?
Are they safe/useful/cost-effective?
Am I just being overly cautious and paranoid to think that we'll need something like this while we adjust to our baby sharing our bed?
Is this something that can be purchased secondhand so we're not dropping tons of money on a product that may not work for us?
If you didn't use a product like this, what did you do to feel more comfortable co-sleeping during the early weeks of total sleep deprivation?
Thanks in advance :)
