I am 10 weeks pregnant and was planning a homebirth and working with Beth Karberg, a homebirth midwife here in Fort Collins who I loved and would highly recommend to anyone in the area interested in a homebirth. At both my first two appointments my blood pressure was high so I now have to transfer care to an MD. Beth recommended using a family practice doctor who does OB care and hospital deliveries. They are not surgeons and tend to be the least interventionist of everyone who gives birth in the hospital. There is a CNM only practice in Fort Collins but they are overseen by OB's and she thought a family practice doctor was my best option (plus if my blood pressure stays high I may even risk out of a CNM practice). Beth recommended Jeff Kaufman of Rocky Mountain Family Physicians and said she has numerous families who have worked with him and said he is very respectful of homebirth, natural childbirth, and as less interventions as possible. I have an interview set up with him today (I was planning to interview him to be my husband and my primary care doctor and just found out yesterday I have to transfer pregnancy care). I hope when I met him today we both like him and he can take over my care.

I do have some reservations though. I've never considered a family practice doctor for OB care. Has anyone else used a family practice doctor for OB care? What was your experience? I tend to like female doctors much more than male doctors though I have had two very good GI doctors who were both male and I really liked. I have never had a primary care or OB/GYN who was a male before so that gives me a little hesitation as well.

Has anyone worked with Jeff Kauffman at Rocky Mountain Family Physicians before? What was your experience? Would you recommend him? What do you think of the other doctors in that practice? Experience doesn't have to be for OB care but could be for primary care or pediatrics as well.

Thanks so much!
