Names?

Who has started thinking about names already?

For us, if we have a boy he will be Trystan Ash. For a girl, I would like Elba for a first name, but DH isn't convinced. He likes it but would prefer it for a middle name. Elba was the name of a favorite relative of mine that recently passed at the age of 95. She was one of the neatest people I've ever known so I would love to name a daughter after her.

During my last pregnancy, once I picked her name we kept seeing it pop up everywhere, in movies and all sorts of things, even though it is not at all a common name. Last week we started watching a show whose male lead's real name is Idris Elba, so I am taking it as a sign that it's the right name!

Still need a middle name, we have a family tradition of tree names so I will need to find another one. Already using Juniper, Acacia, and Elowen (Cornish for Elm), don't know what to use this time if we have another girl!

Names! UGH!  It's the hardest thing about pregnancy.  It took us almost the whole time to finally pick DS's name.  I think we finally settled around 38 weeks.  Of course we didn't know he was a boy but I find girl names really easy and those were picked and settled on super early. And since we didn't have a girl they are still up for grabs this time. So now we have to find another boy name we like since we aren't finding out again.  DH has already vetoed all of my choices and I've vetoed all of his.  thumb.gif

Haha, that's how it was for my second daughter with my first husband, except we picked a boy name easily and then fought and fought about the girl name. We ended up agreeing on a name that was really out there that I wouldn't have picked except for the loooooong battle over it, but now we totally love it, and she gets lots of compliments on her name.

We have a few ideas floating around, but we haven't decided on anything yet.  The few names we both agree on are just "okay" and the names we each love, the other doesn't like.  So...we're kind of stuck for now.

I bought a baby name book but haven't even looked through it much.  I don't know why but it's hard for me to really think about a name until I feel the baby kicking or see whether it's a boy or girl at the 20 week ultrasound.  You'd think it would feel more real since I saw the baby on an ultrasound last week but I guess I'm still nervous until I get out of the first trimester.

We rotate who picks them names. This time is DH's turn. The other spouse always has veto power to veto horrible names though. it works really well for us. We have the same baby name book we have had since we had our first and its fun to go through the book and see what names we were considering with each child. We haven't talked names yet and most likely won't until around 20 weeks or more.

We already know that if this baby is a girl (which DH is insistent that it must be a girl because a boy can't wear my daughter's hand me downs... 0_o) we'll name her Sidney Tyler. The problem is that DH's last name's initial is D, and something tells me that's a TERRIBLE plan...

For a boy, we're still stumped, but we keep joking about naming him with the initials RRDD so we can call him R2D2

Oh my gosh, I love that!

And I love going with tree names for the middle name. That is very cool.

DH's father passed away many years ago and his name was Stephen, so that will be the middle name for a boy.

I had a dream that we had twins (we're not) and we named them Elizabeth and Harry. Neither of those are in the running!

Katroshka, speaking of names, I keep reading yours as "Kartoshka," which is potato in Russian. I think it would be cute if someone were named "little potato." :)

I am LOVING the tree names... Linden, Willow (popular), Hawthorne, Lilac, Aspen, and I am liking Amur (Amur choke cherry, Amur corktree, Amur maple) and Balsam. We have our names picked out but you inspired me to look up tree names!

poppyseed- Cute for a little while at least- I'm not sure I would want to be called little potato!

LinnieThree- I love Aspen but feel like it sounds too, I don't know, yacht-clubby? Because of Aspen CO. During my last pregnancy I kept wishing it didn't have that association.

Ooh, I love Linden.  :)

One of our favorite names is Hill.  It's SO mom's maiden name, but it rhymes with his last name so I'm kind of hung up on that.  Maybe as a middle name?  Linden Hill...hmm...

Linden Hill is very cute. I've also really liked Linden, thought about it last time for a middle name but didn't feel like it flowed right, and it doesn't really with Elba, either, so if I can convince DH then that won't work for us.

I really like Linden too- its where my name 'Lindsay' comes from. I have already posted it somewhere else but the names that we have been tossing around for over a year have really stuck and we have decided that they are the official selections- James Derek (my dad is Derek) and Sarah June (my beloved gma is June). Our older two are Charlotte Winter (I am Lindsay Autumn) she is almost 5 and Deacon Ronald (DH's dad was Ronald), he just turned 3. I love naming babies- boys are definitely harder. I love the sound and simplicity of James. I think it's handsome, smart and masculine. Both names are very simple and classic yet they are moving away from the intricate old fashioned trend (like we did with Charlotte in 2006- when it wasn't even in the top 100). Both of our selections are very "popular" on the name lists but in my area, I have not heard of a baby with one of those names in years... not since I was in school. We get a lot of mixed responses about the name Deacon but we still love his name but this time we want to go very simple.

I love talking about baby names.  It's funny to me that everyone always thinks it's so hard to come up with a boy name.  I could name 3 baby boys right now, no problem.  But girls?  Fresh out.

I actually like Charlotte.  Never considered that one...and it goes great with my crazy name from the other thread.  I liked Elizabeth, but dh knows a little girl who is totally out of control named that, and it gives him such a bad connotation.  Too bad.

I just tried to track down the meaning of Charlotte.  Some place say free, some say free man, some say woman of character or strong worman.  Anybody know a reliable site for the meaning of a name?

We had a boy name picked out within 5 minutes of me telling DH I was pregnant with our last one, and we will use that name for this one, if we have a boy. But after 3 girls it is definitely harder to come up with another one I really love!

I've considered Linden too...and Landon. I like them both...but I'm really just thinking this one is a girl so I'm not thinking to seriously about boy names right now! 2 of my former coworkers and another friend all just recently had baby girls and they all named their daughters Adeline. I had no idea that one was so popular!

Our daughter is Sarah Jane, so of course I love your choice of Sarah June smile.gif. Our son is Sean Patrick.  So our first two children have "S" names, which wasn't done on purpose, but now my DH wants to continue with the "S" theme.  I'm not sure if I do.  Would it be too cutesy? We like simple, classic names.  If we continue with the "S" theme for a boy we'd use Samuel Craig.  For a girl DH likes Samantha, I'm not sure how in love I am with Samantha, though.  All I can think of is Who's the Boss! I do like Samantha Louise, though.  Other girls names I like are Caroline, Catherine, Eliza.  Boys I like Peter, James, Thomas.  It's funny, I always thought I'd go for more unique names, but all I'm drawn to now are the classics.

PNWMama- Personally I wouldn't do all S names unless you pick some that make other sounds like "Sh", just because when you start calling for them and whatnot you may mix them up. Two of my daughters have "fr" in their names, and that does it to me all the time. But maybe I'm just too scatterbrained!

I LOVE the name Charlotte and I am thrilled that we chose it. We get compliments on it everywhere. I love Elizabeth too but dh said No to that one. Charlotte means "petite and feminine" - it is the female diminutive of Charles. My fave naming site is Nameberry.com

That's awesome that your daughter is named Sarah Jane!!! I love all the same names as you. I was pushing for Caroline esp because DH's mom passed last year and her name was Carol. I love your choice of Samantha Louise. I will forever think of Samantha from Bewitched and I loved her- for the same reason, I have always liked the name Tabitha (and Elizabeth for that matter, the real name of Samantha). I really REALLY like Peter but (and I hate to say this) but I always think of a certain male "part" when I hear that name now which is why Richard has fallen out of favor (although I love that name- it is a shame). I love Thomas too and our 3 yr old DS is Thomas the Train obsessed which is kind of what lead me to James. I also like Christopher and Matthew- very simple and classic. I could talk names all day long!!!!
