WhAT is up with my button holer?

I have a button holer foot that attaches to my sewing machine.

I attach the button the the sizer and it makes the hole..... it goes up just fine and then it gets "stuck" and won't go to the right and "return" and finish the hole, it just keeps sewing the same spot and makes a big clump of thread. I've practiced like 15 times now and I'm getting frustrated.

WHAT am I doing wrong?

My machine is a singer.

I have a kenmore that has a similar kind of buttonholer.

Do you need to "reset" the buttonholer before you do a button? I mean, with mine I have to take the stitch off "buttonhole" setting and then put it back on before I do another button, or else my machine does exactly what you say--it does the first side then won't go back and forth or do the other side. I think it doesn't realize it's supposed to make a buttonhole! You have to reset it each time you make a buttonhole.

HTH!! It took me a while to figure this out too The machine makes a kind of "click" when i take it off the setting and put it back on, like it knows it's resetting the buttonhole.

I realized that if I didn't pull down the little doohickey behind and to the left of the needle (that stops the buttonholer thing) I ended up with all kinds of problems.

Resetting the buttonhole stitch might also help.
