considering a move to LONG ISLAND!

We currently live in Pittsburgh and are considering a move to Long Island-- please educate me!

We are going to look next week.  I want to see Huntington and the schools in Centerport/Harborview as well as Port Jefferson and the schools in Three Villages/Setauket.

What about pre-schools around Port Jefferson or Huntington?

We don't vax-- how hard will it be to find a doctor?

We eat natural, local foods-- fresh eggs, beef, chicken-- is this just impossible to obtain in Long Island?

What areas would you suggest for us to live?  Need to be reasonable distance to Stony Brook. Looking for fantastic school, outdoor areas, neighborhood feel with families (is this impossible in the burbs?!).

What else should we see there?

Any help appreciated!!

hey there-

I don't know how helpful I'll be since I really don't know much about suffolk county (i live in nassau) BUT although Long island is not a "crunchy" place to live, there are pockets of us all over the place. A very good friend of mine lives in Kings Park and i visit her frequently.  According to her, Northport has great schools, has an alternative community, a health food store in the main town area (google Northport health food store since i can't remember the name!) and a few alternative doctors (Dr. Palevsky and Dr. Tomei) have practices there.  although Northport isn't THAT close to Stony Brook, it's worth checking out because it's beautiful!  I would also look into Setauket but i don't know anything other than how pretty the area is!

Also, look into holistic moms groups over there.  We have a chapter here on the south shore of nassau and i'll assume there is one on the north shore as well.  it's a good way to connect with other mommas!

Good luck with your decision!

Diana
