Inducing lacation for adoption

Hi Ladies,

So I could really some advice, good news about inducing lacation.  We have been offered a baby to adopt, due in November, and I would really like to breastfeed.

I haven't ever given birth, and so I haven't breastfed - but I'd sure like to!

Does anyone have any experience with this?  Did you use Domparidone to induce lacation?  At what dosage?  What about Fenugreek/Blessed Thistle?  Any success, and if yes, how much?!

Any and all help, advice, suggestions, would be wonderful!

Any suggestions on a really good, and reasonally priced electric breast pump?

Thank you all!

Congratulations!

I hate to be one of those annoying people that respond with minimal guidance/knowledge, but a friend induced lactation just using a breast pump.  She had given birth and nursed her two children, but adopted her sister's baby at 6 months when she passed away.  I don't think her niece/daughter was EBF, although I don't know the details of that, or whether the fact that she had birthed and EBF her own kids enabled her to induce lactation.

As for a good pump.  Medela Pump in style is the pump I use.  Its expensive, but I see them on craigslist for as low as $50.  When I was pregnant I was super paranoid and went with the FDA guidance that says breast pumps shouldn't be shared because the pump can become contaminated and pass on disease.  I had never seen a pump before, but having seen one now and how they work, I would  buy one used and just replace the tubes.

Congrats!
There's some excellent info at http://www.asklenore.info/breastfeeding/induced_lactation/faq.shtml
Even if you can't induce a full supply, breastfeeding is about more than milk. If you do need to supplement with donor milk or formula, you can use a Lact-Aid (which was developed by an adoptive dad for his wife) so your babe is only fed at the breast. http://www.lact-aid.com/ It is by far the best at-the-breast supplementer.
The PIS is fine but I'd rent a hospital grade.
GL!

Thank you very much ladies, your suggestions and help have been wonderful!

Crazyfishgirl, it is much more challenging to induce lactation when I have never breastfed or given birth before.  From everything I've read, with the help of websites from Megan73 and dejagerw, I may not be wholly successful, but if bonding happens, then the very best I can pray for is a happy baby and happy mommy (and daddy!!)

Any and all help is always welcome and appreciated.

Thank you, thank you!
