Insurance Coverage of Homebirth

Thread Starter

I've heard there is a law in MD that insurance has to cover homebirth.  Has anyone heard of this or know where I can find more info about it?  Or I'd love to hear others experience getting their insurance to pay for a homebirth.  My insurance provider is Aetna.

Here are some good resources to find more info about this:

Hope that helps point you in the right direction! :)

I was told today that most homebirth midwives can bill your insurance for your prenatal care/delivery, so talk to the providers you are interested in and see if they can help you with that.

I have Aetna and they covered my homebirth 100%, even though they didn't know anything about homebirth when I called, and I have heard that they have issued statements opposing homebirth.  I agree with the above poster, I just let my midwives' billing company handle everything and it was fine, no questions asked.  The billing companies are very motivated to get reimbursement so will work hard to get it for you, your midwives, and themselves!  When they send in the bill, there isnt anything about homebirth on there- just the codes for maternity care, birth, postpartum visits, etc that they'd see on any other doctor's bill.
