If you could only have one...

Getting ready for #2. With DS I tried a Maya Wrap, pouch, and Ergo.

I could never figure out the Maya Wrap or another ring sling I was given, and I tried everything, watched videos, looked in the mirror, etc. I don't think a ring sling is for me, but I still have my Maya and will probably keep trying it.

I hated the pouch. I actually got rid of that one.

The Ergo was great when DS was 6 months and older, but it's SO complicated with all of the straps, etc. and I always need help getting it adjusted correctly. I still have it and plan to use it, but probably won't get the newborn insert and will wait until this one is older.

I am debating the following, but have limited funds. I hope to eventually have all three, but IF you had to choose one, which would you choose?

1. Moby

2. woven wrap

3. Mei Tai

I am short (5 feet 2 inches), with a short torso.

For me, it would absolutely hands down be a woven wrap.  I didn't start using woven wraps with DD until 8 months, and they're still my favorite carriers with her at 2.5 years/30 lbs.  Woven wraps are one of the few carriers (along with stretchy wraps and ring slings) that can provide optimal positioning for newborns, which is another huge plus to them in my book.  I'm planning to wrap this new baby from day one, and hopefully get her/him wrapped on my back in the first few weeks.  Woven wraps are also the only safe way to wear very young babies on your back, and I'm assuming I'll HAVE to wear the baby on my back to be able to meet DD's needs too.

Mobys are nice but only last until the baby is about 15 lbs.  Your baby might fit in the Ergo by then, but if you don't like the Ergo, then you'll be kind of stuck with nothing to use.

Mei tais are great for after the baby is big enough to reach to sit legs out, and has pretty good head control, like maybe 3 or 4 months.  But they're not the best for earlier than that because you can't get optimal newborn positioning in them.  So if you get one, you'd still need to get something for the newborn period.

I think if I were you I'd sell the ring sling to help fund the other carrier(s).  I'm not huge on ring slings either.  Like I know how to use them properly and all that, but I just don't find them that comfortable.  So if you know it's not for you, let it go and use that money for something that might work better for you!

I really loved the Moby when DD was tiny. It just felt so snug and comfortable and was super easy for me to tie on and leave it on for going to the store or something and not have to adjust it very much.

Congratulations!

If I could only get one and it had to do for newborn plus older, I would get a woven wrap or a Beco Gemini. The Gemini is quick and easy to use and is good for a newborn with no insert and I used it for DD up to 24 pounds.

If I could only get two, I would do woven or a Moby plus a mei tai. I love wraps but I think it's so easy to get a baby on your back with a mei tai. You can get wraps/other carriers for very good prices used. Plus you can sell your sling to help pay for it on thebabywearer.com

Since when? MT's are great carriers for newborns on front or back.

With ds2 I would have picked a woven, no question. Durable, comfy, good for a huge range of ages & sizes, although different length work better for different carries. I loved wrapping with ds2. With ds3, I started using the MT right away & I barely ever wrapped him. I loved the ease & speed of the MT. I'm hoping to feel the wrap love again this time around, but suspect I'll be using a MT a lot.

For newborn to 12 lbs-ish we used the Moby most. Then a Mei Tai until now @ 15lbs we use a Boba almost exclusively. I keep wanting to try new Moby carries but the Boba is just so darn easy to use! :)

I, too, could not get the hang of the ring sling.
