Good article about newborn eye ointment & hep b shot?

I have a friend who believes that the vitamin K and hep B shot for newborns are absolutely necessary, circumcision is beneficial, and eye ointment in the newborn is necessary.  I shared with her the following articles on the other subjects but could not find a specific one on the eye ointment or hep B.  I was a nursing student and learned that eye ointment was only useful against gonnorhea and clamydia, and Ive read it other places too but just cant find it.  What about a good article on the newborn hep b shot?  I told her that hep b is only transmitted thru blood and body fluids and that my newborn would probably not be having unprotected sex or sharing needles any time soon, so I didnt feel it necessary.

Her only arguments for these things is "there must be a reason they are done" duh.gif

Well, I think that most people who use that as their reason for doing them are unlikely to be convinced by an article or research greensad.gif

However, the following website has an in depth story about what can go really, really wrong with the hep b shot in a newborn. It's very rare to have this kind of severe reaction, but this is a 'worst case scenario' that might open her eyes to possible risks. Be warned, it is VERY graphic.

Not sure it helps but we don't do hep b in Canada until grade 7.
We certainly don't have a bunch of hepb positive toddlers running around here just to the north.

BC healthlink website has Hep B vaccination listed at 2, 4 and 6 months old.

Sask gives it at grade 6 unless the mother is Hep B positive.

Ontario is the same as Sask it looks like - babe only gets it at birth if the mother is Hep B positive.

Ahh, the fun of province by province differences in health care smile.gif

Ha Ha yeah I've never heard of a hep B positive child either.  Question, if the mom is already positive, would the baby already have it at birth or would the vaccine actually protect against infection?  Not that I believe vaccines offer much protection anyway....  Another thought, a friend of mine recently attended a huge confrence on vaccines and there were scientists and immunologists, etc there saying that no vaccine is effective in a child under 1 because of how their immune system is, they cant develop antibodies from the vaccines til after that anyway, so they are pointless?  Anyone know more about this?  And anyone know a better way of explaining it rather than that big mess of words I just said?  :)

Here is a link about the protocol for hep b positive women: http://depts.washington.edu/hepstudy/hepB/prevention/perinatal/discussion.html. Looks like they give a hep b immune globulin and then the hep b vaccine series. This protocol does apparently significantly reduce the transmission rate.

I know I started this a long time ago but I just came across a good article for the hep B shot!  http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/07/07/60-things-that-can-go-terribly-wrong-with-hepatitis-b-vaccination.aspx  and   http://www.greenmedinfo.com/anti-therapeutic-action/vaccination-hepatitis-b    I still havent found one about the eye ointment.  BTW My boy did not recieve any of the interventions that I mentioned and he is 2.5 months old and doing awesome!!
