What other movies has your child enjoyed?  How "extreme" are you looking to go?

I should have added that we didn't want it to have too much violence. Most of the knowledge about superheroes that she has is from Word Girl. Other than that, she saw one foreign language action movie. Since then she has been into pretending to emit laser beams and stuff out of her hand. I have seen Spiderman but it was a long time ago and don't remember how violent it was. Does Superman have violence, I should look up their ratings.

If you do a search on Common Sense Media (reviews that go into detail for how appropriate movies are for kids), you get no results for age 5 "Superhero" movies, but a few for age 6:

Hope this helps!

Your dd might like Kiki's Delivery Service. Kiki is a young witch, not a superhero, technically. But she's pretty awesome. It was one of the first movies our kids saw (about that same age). To be honest, I can't think of a single live-action superhero movie that I'd show a 5yo. Superman is pretty violent.

The Incredibles is pretty action packed, but my kids liked it at that age (but we had family movie nightso they were not unexposed to violence).  There have been several other animated super hero movies in the past few years as well.

As a genre, super hero movies tend to be violent--- they are all about good guys versus bad guys after all.

5 would be young for "Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius," and I know it's not an actual "superhero movie," but I don't think there are lots out there that'd be appropriate for a child that young.

Whoops, just remembered that the plot is about all the parents disappearing.  Not a good theme for a 4 year old.

I have found that even G-rated movies have a lot in them that is scary or not appropriate.  To me, "G" means there should be absolutely nothing objectionable (like Sesame Street...you could watch it with your great granny or your 4 year old and not be uncomfortable).  Plenty of G movies have what they call "situations of peril," monsters, meanness, etc.

Ponyo was very popular in our house at that age.

Yes, I agree. I'm going to pass it for now.
