Would you supplement your nursling if you had MS in your family? I was just reading that they have found a link between vit. D deficiencies in birth to 13 yr olds and ms. I have not supplemented my other children and have never given my 6 m old vit. D because I don't really believe it is necessary, but I didn't know of that relevance with ms. Btw it is my mom who is diagnosed. I'm literally crying right now having just read about this and having not supplemented them! My dr is a huge pusher in vit d supplementation, and i feel like if i bring this up with her she will have something to say about having not done so already for the mainstream reasons alone.

Yeah, I'd supplement. There's MS in my family too (my dad). I give my 2 and 4yo 2000 iu/day. Carlsons D drops are easy to give to babies. just 1 tasteless drop and its 400, 1000, or 2000 iu. I'm not sure when I'm going to start supplementing this baby. Ds I decided to start at 6 months since he was a may baby and that would mean starting in the fall. This time I have a november baby! I have more research to do on how well d goes through breastmilk if mom is taking high doses.

Absolutely! I have MS. I take 6500 iu's a day and I read that taking that amt. will pass on enough through breastmilk to equal 400 iu's for the baby. Since I started taking this dose (I guess about 2.5 years now), I have had major improvement in my MS symptoms.
In the MS research magazine I get, there is an article on a new study with Vit D and MS patients and improvement in their MS!
Don't stress about not having given them supplements in the past, just give them now. I give my older kids 2000 iu's a day.
