Career change ideas needed!

My job is just not going anywhere.  I'm a television editor and the media business is losing money left and right...'they' are saying that it's like the music industry 10 years ago, the bottom is about to fall out.  What I do is becoming less of a specialty and the equipment gets easier all the time.  The industry standard is shift work and freelance - with my husband's crazy schedule I need to stick to business hours only and minimal overtime.  Sales are slow at my company and I'm the only part timer so I might have to think about this sooner than later :(

I don't have a good idea of what I would want to do.  The obvious place my skills would transfer to is corporate communications, but most of those jobs require writing experience and a degree.  I can write and do basic graphic design but I don't have the professional experience or the degree.  I have some volunteer experience with communications but most was for an environmental advocacy group...biggest industry in town is oil and gas eyesroll.gif.  I have looked into degree programs and my broadcasting diploma is good for half, either at the local university or an online school (Athabasca University) but we just moved and we don't have any savings eyesroll.gif.  My DH has said he does not support going into debt.

I just want to hear career change stories and ideas...  If you have gone through a transition how did you swing it financially and how did you balance your family life?

I just took a job as a social media manager for a nonprofit. Social media is rapidly expanding and very difficult for businesses to wrap their heads around. It is also becoming more an more vital for marketing purposes. I'm sure supply will eventually catch up with demand, but it is very difficult to automate because things change so rapidly. There are degree programs out there now for it, but a background in digital communications and some intensive reading is all I had the landed me the job. It's all brand new and nobody can say they have many years experience in it anyway. The best part of my job is that the hours are very flexible and I will be able to do much of it from anywhere as long as I have a smartphone. I landed a part-time position with flexible hours that still pays really well hourly, which was far more than I was hoping for. My background was originally web design, but that field seems to be in a race to the bottom price-wise.

Congratulations!  That sounds like a really good fit.

I moved from being a linguist to IT security and all it took was some studying and certifications.  Found out that jobs want certs especially with IT security.  All big companies have some sort of position or "cell" of IT security professionals.  I love it too it's a lot of fun and quite interesting.
