Pre-k and pee accidents

My 3.5 year old has been potty learned since 2. He was very easy about it and pretty much trained himself and we've never had any sort of regression. I thank my lucky stars for it too!

DS started school full time in August and has had a few accidents after/during nap but done well other than that. But this week there has been wet pants sent home every day! His teacher just called me to ask if he was having trouble at home. She said all of his accidents occur in or on the way to the bathroom. The problem, and I have noticed this at home, is that he is waiting until the absolute last second to go pee. He will be eating or whatever and all of a sudden he is dancing around and then freaking out "Mommy! I need to go pee!!!" I have tried to tell him to listen to his body. He used to grab himself so I would know he needed to go but now it's not obvious until it's almost too late. He is always dry through the night its just around 11am and after school around 4pm that he has such urgency.

He doesn't drink juice except for during school snack times and those are all natural and 50/50 with water.

Does anyone have any tricks to getting a kid to listen to their body, stop what they are doing and go pee when they need to pee. Pull ups are not an option, in order for him to go to school he needs to be self sufficient in the potty dept.

Thank you for any help!

My son is 4.5 now, and we went through a phase a lot like this earlier this summer. I was about to pull my hair out because he was over 4 and having this sudden streak of accidents. I had to start watching the clock and sending him regularly, and also start paying more attention to his signals and insisting he stopped playing to go, even though it had been a LONG time since I had to do that. He wasn't in school at the time, but I would ask his teacher if she could start scheduling in potty breaks. At my DS's preschool they go before snack and before outside time, the whole class, since the bathrooms are in the hallway.

I'd also suggest that you request scheduled restroom breaks.  He's having too much fun to "listen to his body".  If she doesn't want to have the whole class waiting in a line, request she send your child at the times of  day you think would help the problem.

Preschool should have scheduled potty time, you go no matter what. Usually it is about every 2 hours. That will clear up the problem.

Can they remind him?
