i bought a bunch of tropicals recently and they all seem to be really happy. i have a nice sunny large upstairs and i have more than 100 plants including the large and the small. i swear, i believe they can sense the other plants and know that this is "plant friendly" place to be and are growing accordingly. to that end, my dracaena has already put out a baby. this plant is like a mini palm tree with a bark body that must be about 3 inches in diameter. the top is a spiky palm tree. it stands about shoulder high.
the baby is coming along slow but steady. earlier he put out babies through the drainage holes, but they were misplaced and didn't last. this baby is standing in a pretty good spot about 3 inches away from his bark body and about an inch or so from the edge of the pot. it's like a tall strand of grass, and seems to be dividing at the top. i am enjoying watching it unfold.
i would LOVE to help this baby grow into a full size plant. my question is whether i should let him stay where he is or attempt a transplantation? and if the latter, at what point do i take him out? obviously i would excise deep and with wide margins so as not to nick his roots and trying to give him a lot of his original soil, and probably keep his new pot next to his daddy plant.
has anyone transplanted these types of plants before? do you have advice on how long to wait? etc? many thanks.
