DS is 22 months old and he's been learning how to use the potty since about 15 months. It's been really laid back and has worked well for us. He is at the point where he will *always* go on the potty unprompted if he is naked (which is how he spends most of his time at home now for this reason). But he only tells me *after* the fact when he is wearing a diaper (such as when we have just gotten home from an outing or has recently gotten a diaper on for bed). He doesn't ask to take it off so he can go on the potty. So I've been trying to help him transition by putting him in underpants at home (without pants over them). We talk a lot about how we can't go pee pee in underpants, but he still often forgets I think with that familiar feeling of cloth on his bottom especially when he's really engrossed in something. We've got maybe a 40% success rate with underpants.
So anyway, we've been at this stage for a while: perfect while naked, not a word with a diaper, moderate success with underpants. Anyone have any suggestions for how to help him with the idea of taking diapers and underpants off so he can use the potty in time? We do give him plenty of chances to use it before putting on diapers, but if he needs to go when he's wearing one he just goes without any warning.
