Popularity of "bad" carriers?

Everything I know about babywearing I've learned from a babywearing workshop and here on MDC.. and the basic no-no's are no forward facing and no dangling from the crotch, right?

 

So what's with the Baby Bjorn (I think that's the one) and these forward-facing, crotch dangling popular carriers? Seems like they are so popular?

I'd like to hear more, I've only ever seen crotch dangling and that's what I do with my wrap now.
