I would say because an egg was never alive?

Thanks.  :-)  There's more to it than that, of course, but this might do as a temporary answer for a young child.

We're probably about 85% vegan in our family (DH is 100%; DD eats cheese; I drink cow milk in my coffee).  We don't eat eggs by themselves but when we are out or visiting others, DD and I have had cake and other baked goods that do contain eggs.

It has never been a problem for us.  For us, it comes down to a simple question:  am I eating a dead animal?  While I have problems with factory production of milk and cheese products, it is less of an ethical issue for me than actually consuming flesh.  Sorry for my inartfulness in expressing this, but that is basically my position.  DD has asked where milk and cheese come from, and I tell her that it is a cow's mommy milk.  She does find the concept of eating animals gross.  Eggs are a weird area, because it is a borderline issue.  That's why we try to avoid them as much as possible.
