Hi. Had a miscarriage this month at 13 weeks. Had a D&C on Oct. 13. Found out I was carrying twins but both were blighted ovums. My midwife has advised that I wait two cycles before trying to conceive again and I'm find with that. I'm just wondering how long it will be before my period even comes again? I have no idea what my HTC levels are. Has anyone here been through something similar? How long did it take for your period to return?

I'm so sorry for your loss!
Â
When your fertility will return is highly variable, but often it's not much more than a very delayed cycle.  The advice to wait a few cycles before trying again is usually b/c of two main reasons: dating purposes and emotional readiness. If you chart or plan to have an early u/s then dating doesn't matter. Whether you are emotionally ready is a very valid question and one to really consider. Definitely take you time to grieve this loss, but also know that it's okay to feel ready quickly if that is what you are feeling. My losses were both very early so I can only imagine how much harder it gets as the pregnancy progresses.  Please post in the Pregnancy Loss forum if you need additional support. Those mamas have been there and can offer great advice as well.  Sometimes doctors will also tell you to wait so that the uterine lining thickens and I'm not sure if this is more of an issue with a D&C or not- it could be something you ask in the Pregnancy Loss forum. Otherwise, many women find that they are more fertile directly following a loss because of the slightly heightened hormone levels. You might want to consider charting your basal body temperature and cervical fluid so that you know when you are gearing up to ovulate again and then you can make a decision about how you feel.Â

i'm so, so sorry for your loss. i had a blighted ovum about a year ago, the d&c took place around 9 weeks and it took 30 days before i got my period. the thing that surprised me the most out of the experience was that i was getting positive home pregnancy tests all the way up to the day i started my period! this actually was pretty painful emotionally as my doc told me i could start ttc again right away... and i thought i had succeeded only to find out it was leftover hormones from the previous pregnancy!
Â
for what it's worth, i was told there really is no reason to wait to try again... but my experience was that even when my period returned, i had some pretty wacky cycles for a while. hope that's not the case for you. i have several friends who had losses and were pregnant again (with successful pregnancies!) within three cycles.
Â
wishing you the best!
