Low Blood Platelets- if you had this problem, did it get better with supplements and diet?

Hi all! My midwife and I were discussing my blood test results and how low my blood platelets were (46). She put me on some supplements right away- beetroot, astragalus (sp?), and b12. She also told me to make sure I bump up my protein, vitamin c, and zinc in my diet. So game plan is set and I feel good about it! I've done some research on this and understand the concerns and issues with it... I realize mine are extremely low. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck finding anyone who said theirs got better with food or supplements. Everyone I spoke to said their levels didn't go up without steroids or a blood transfusion shortly before delivery. My concern is I have a HBAC planned and if my levels don't go up, my midwife will have to drop me and I'll have to see an OB and deliver in the hospital. Obviously I'll do that if it's safer but I'd desperately like to avoid it. So my question is this, if you or someone you know had this problem- did it get better with food & supplements? What was your experience with it? Thanks in advance for any input. :)

Also, we'll be re-testing in 2-3 weeks to check levels again. I considered it could have been a lab error but then I realized I have been bruising rather easily and the bruises stay forever and I have had HORRIBLE nausea. So I'm not too hopeful on it being a lab error. PS I am 17 weeks- due 4/11. So we have time to work on it!

Just an update in case anyone finds this thread in the future. My platelets doubled to 104! I need them at a minimum of 140 to deliver at home with my MW, preferably 150. Since they doubled in 2 weeks, that shouldn't be a problem. :)

Wow, this is interesting! A funny thing is, I'm pregnant with twins and I got awful cravings for beetroot even before I got pregnant. And once I did, I keep craving it.

My blood count has always been ok - I guess I needed it in advance. So strange!

That is really strange- our bodies are so amazing! Good luck with your twins. :)
