Maybe I should post this on some home improvement forum, but

do I have one-way walls (like one-way mirrors, but for hearing)? My 7 and 9 year old can never hear me but I can hear them. Tonight they are talking in bed. I am in the dining room. I can hear them. I tell them loudly to be quiet. They continue, in normal voices. I can hear their normal voices. I tell them very loudly. They continue. I yell to be quiet (ironically). They are still chatting, no pause, nothing. I walk in a bit furious that they are fully ignoring me and they are actually surprised. "We didn't hear you." How is this possible? If I can hear their normal voices, how can they not hear me yelling??

I often joke that I speak in an 'adult only frequency.' My mouth is moving, words are coming out, but the children's ears don't register it at all.

Try using words like 'cookie' or 'candy'. If you don't get a reaction from that, then you might really have one-way walls :)

No, you just have kids who are immune to mom standing downstairs yelling at them to be quiet. They know you don't really mean it ,or you'd come upstairs! Your house is fine, your kids are too clever.

Yeah, except I don't even have an upstairs. They are, at most, 15 feet away from me! It just boggles the mind the genuine surprise they have when I bust in upset. 'What, mom?'
