TTC, starting metformin and new to the forum

Hello smile.gif I am 22 and my husband is 23. Hubby and I have been friends since HS, dating 3 years and married since June 2010. I have been an LPN for 3 years, hubby is a lead line operator at a facility where they make plastic bags. He is the love of my life, my best friend. We have both always known we want kids. Officially decided in August 2010 that we were officially going to try...we kept track of everything, stressed about it, and were disappointed when we got - test after - test. We have tried several different timing methods since...and have tried the "not trying" method, in hopes it was all the stressing causing us to not conceive.

We went to the doctor to talk about our issues on Monday. He said it sounds like I have PCOS (never had a reg. period, miss it sometimes, late sometimes) and I am a little heavy. He put me on Metformin starting that day. He ordered a sperm count for my husband (still waiting on results). My next appt is on the 10th, when he is going to do blood test to see if I'm ovulating (based on last period). And then i have an appt on the 30th to discuss everything with him.

Im new to this forum stuff. Just looking for people going through a similar situation, who i can talk to and relate to. Wishing everyone the best of luck smile.gif

Hi Nursenikki,  Your post didn't give much information, but I would encourage you to make sure your doctor is running the proper diagnostics to ensure you do have PCOS, as opposed to a variety of other issues.  Technically, a woman must test positive in two out of three areas to be diagnosed with PCOS, this includes elevated androgens, poly-cystic ovaries, and/or anovulation.  PCOS also comes with acne, male pattern hair loss and hair growth, and weight issues along with increased risk for Type II diabetes and heart disease.  At minimum you should have had a vaginal ultrasound and Day 3 hormone tests prior to diagnosis.

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 19 -so 13 years, now.  However, I only started the metformin this past spring to regulate my cycles.  I've really struggled with the Met and I know a number of women that choose not to use it due to its long-term and short-term side effects.  It is serious business, and I really encourage you to make sure you do indeed have PCOS before you take a medication that has such strong and long-term effects.

Also, soulcysters.com and the PCOS challenge are also really great for support (as is Mothering.com). For your sake, I hope you don't have PCOS! Good luck!
