Help me find Curriculum we like?

Thread Starter

I'm in a bit of a pickle planning for next year {2nd grade}. I had bought everything already for 2nd grade with Catholic Heritage Curricula, and we love the program. My pickle is that after much thought and prayer we are no longer Catholic - I reverted to Islam 3 months ago and want a program that fits better with that.

So - is there something else out there similar to Catholic Heritage Curricula without all the Catholic stuff in it? We're fine with slightly Christian as long as it's not overdone, or just secular.

We like Catholic Heritage Curricula for:

~ The Little Bites of learning you do - just a page or two a day which is just right for us.

~ The nice illustrations but without a lot of color to distract

~ The Gentle method in which things are taught

~ The workbooks for less mama prep time

Math we will stick with the same {MCP Math}, but am needing replacements for everything else. Please tell me someone can help?

You may want to look into Five In A Row.

I think the Charlotte Mason method would fit nicely with what you are describing.

www.livingbookscurriculum.com is good.  Its pricey, but you could order the teachers book and get the books from the library.

I myself have re evaluated our path of homeschooling and am very close to deciding not using a curriculum at all. I feel the whole reason why certain people have created their own curriculum and sold it for profit is because they were in the same situation, having different religious, economic and personal views that they created what worked for them. If something isn't working for you from a particular curriculum, you can use what you like and teach what you like and interests your family, that's the wonderful thing about homeschooling. As homeschoolers, there is freedom to do what works best and not turn our homes into curriculum based environments, that would just mean we would become our own business or school, not a home :)

We use an online curriculum, Time4Learning. It does all the work for me. The lessons are interactive, they keep the records, they offer the "playground" as a bonus (it is educational games--the child earns time to play per your set standards), and they let you have access to 3 grade levels within each subject. For example, you daughter would have access to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade for each subject. So if she is ahead in one subject, but a little behind in another, you don't have to worry.

You don't download anything and you can log in anywhere you have a Internet access so it's great if you travel. There are no contracts to sign either. It is a secular site so you wouldn't have problems with indoctrination.

They offer a 2 week trial and they will give you one month free if you have a blog and will write an honest review of your experience. They also have demos on their site.

Joyfully,

Jackie

Maybe you want to check out beestar. I use it as math curriculum on what to teach DD. The online math questions are great. They cover many aspects. These concepts are more advanced than what DD is being taught at shcool. DD is one of the top students in her class now.love.gif
