This isn't new at all.  When I was little my cousin had chicken pox and all of us kids went over to there house to play.  Seriously like 15 cousins and we all got it!  Kind of stupid on the parents part since they didn't think it through.  We were all stuck at home for 2 weeks.

Exposing kids to chickenpox isn't new, but sending lollipops is fairly new, since chickenpox party's are scarce now.  Before the vaccine every doctor encouraged parents to get their kids exposed because it's less severe in childhood, your parents were just following normal recommendations and smart commonsense.  It was so common back then, that if you waited, you would just get it anyway, but in adulthood when it could be more serious.

Be very careful if you decide to do this, it's technically illegal. They're trying to catch people who are doing it & they are treating it the same as sending anthrax through the mail.

I think the chickenpox virus would only survive on a saliva coated object for an hour or 2.

It bothered me how the mother charged $50 per lollipop....if she truly wanted to help others, she wouldn't have charged that much. Maybe the cost of shipping and lollipop, which would be about $2....to charge $50 is kind of sleazy, in my opinion! You would think she would want to help others who don't vaccinate, right?

Yeah, supposedly that was to cover the cost of overnight shipping, but I doubt it's that expensive.
