So many blisters :( - Exclusive pumping problems

Thread Starter

So for the past few days my nipples have been a bit sore during pumping, I kind of just ignored it because 1) I have a good pain tolerance, and 2) I attributed to the fact that the past two days have been crazy and at times I have had to go up to 4 1/2 hours between pumping so to make up for it I was pumping every 2 hours when I could.

Well today after showering I noticed I have some pretty bad chafing and what look like blisters, real blisters, not milk blisters.

Well no wonder its so damn painful..

What should I do?

Im doing some sea salt soaks at the moment because thats my go-to fix for things like this.

If they pop will the puss contaminate the breast milk?

How can I heal them faster?

I have Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple butter, is that OK to use on them?

I also feel like my flanges might be the problem...but we have tried every size and no matter what I end up with atleast an inch to an inch and a half of my areola being pulled into the tube.

Any advice would be great, because this is really starting to hurt :(

yikes! im sorry i have no real advice for you. when i EPed with my ds1, my nipples where getting seriously pulled into the flanges just as youre describing toward the end of our pumping experience (month 10) and they would be sooo red/purple. i stopped pumping for other reasons and never got any blisters,  so i dont have anything to offer you =\

i hope someone has something more useful to say...

I have no advice, sorry, but this is a bad thing?  I didn't know... this happens when I pump, too.

Poor you!
Two quick things - I've never tried either but I've heard good things about using olive oil as a lubricant when pumping and Dr. Newman's all-purpose nipple ointment.

What brand of pump do you have? If it is Medela, they have soft fit flanges that I LOVED when I was pumping at work. They feel more like baby nursing than the hard flanges.

I was given olive oil to use when pumping in the NICU right after the baby was born.  I never bothered, but now I've got cracks and bleeding, so I'm busting it out to see if it helps.
