Thread Starter

I am new here...23 and TTC my 2nd baby. I have been trying for almost a year now and nothing has happened so we finally decided to buy Ovulation tests from dollar general I took one test on October 29th and another on October 30th and both were positive my question is...

How many months did you get positive Ovulation tests did you get before you finally got pregnant? and how soon after you ovulate is it okay to test?

Welcome to MDC!!  wave.gif

I'm sorry you've been experiencing trouble getting pregnant!  OPK's work well for some women and not so much for others.  Some women will find that they never get positives, positives for days on end, or positives at random times in their cycle (like well after confirmed O).  There is also the issue of interpretation with the strips (like from the dollar store)- is the test line truly darker than the control?  What if it's half dark?  Etc.  And with the more expensive kind that are +/- (or smilie) you can easily miss your peak day.  And beyond all these things, OPK's cannot confirm ovulation, they can only tell you when you are gearing up to O.  Your body can gear up to O and then not succeed, only to try again a few days or even weeks later.  But if you stopped testing, assuming you O'd you could easily miss your actual O.

Basically, I do not personally put much stock in OPK's and highly recommend charting your basal body temperature and cervical fluid instead.  If you'd like to continue using OPK's they make a nice addition to your chart and you can see if they in fact line up with O.  Charting will tell you when you are fertile, when/if you ovulate, how long your luteal phase is (the time between O and AF- it is generally agreed you need at least 10 days to sustain a pregnancy), when to test, when to expect AF, if you're pregnant, and if there is anything of concern happening with your cycle.  If you're interested in learning to chart, just post!

If you'd like to just continue with OPK's for now and see how that works, then it is generally recommended to test about 12-14 days past ovulation (DPO).  You would need to assume that you ovulated 24-36 hours AFTER your last positive OPK.  So you can most likely expect accurate results on an HPT 13-16 days after your last positive OPK.  Of course you can test earlier.  If implantation occurs on the early end, you could get positive results around 8-9 DPO (9-11 days after your OPK+).  And many women get accurate results around 11 DPO (12-13 days after your OPK+).  If you're using dollar store HPT's you could just test every day from 9 days after the OPK+ until you get a BFP or AF shows up.  Just be careful of evap lines and squinters!  Good luck!

Jaimee- I thout "they" say you will most likely O 24-36 hrs after your FIRST positive OPK. I could be wrong on that though...???

I think that the official line is most likely what you are saying: after the FIRST positive OPK.  But the problem is in the interpretation of the test.  You could have a positive OPK, but not a peak OPK.   But they often say in the instructions to simply not test anymore after getting a positive.  For a lot of women, that would result in missing the peak day.  The body can gear up to O for several days and if you're still getting a positive test then it's likely you still haven't reached that peak day and still haven't O'd.  I'm sure that's why they give the 24-36 hour window of time, but many women will still be outside this window.  Of course, this is all assuming that the test is working well for the woman in question, too!
