The Most Ergonomic Breastfeeding pillow FOR baby?

We'll be taking the train to visit my parents and brother later this month. I can foresee our son wanting to nurse during that time, however, the problem I'm currently facing is he only wants to nurse laying down. I'm pretty sure this is because he's a tall baby(27.5 inches and 27 lbs), and if I try to nurse him cradle-hold he fusses because I kinda have to squish him down(I've never used or even considered a breastfeeding pillow until now). I haven't tried nursing him in the clutch hold for months, but I was wondering what pillow out there could he stretch out the best on? Do Boppies squish down? I was thinking the Pollywog or the My Brest Friend seemed like it might work well.

Have you tried nursing him with him sitting upright and straddling your thigh?

I really liked my MilkBar twin pillow

Not straddling my thigh, no. I have tried nursing him upright with him straddling my waist, but he has to bend over too far, and nursing him in an odd sort of "clutch" hold, which is hard to support his head for the entire duration of him nursing that way - hence the question on support pillows - though he is severely more pleased with that position than the cradle hold. It never even occurred to me to try him on my thigh. I'll try that the next time he wants to nurse, thanks, :)

I'll look into the MilkBar, thanks!

I nurse my 36" toddler with cradle hold. Not sure what you mean by "squish him down"? His legs stick waaaaay off my lap, but his head is approximately where it was when he was a newborn.

Where do his legs end up if you try cradle hold? I occasionally still use my boppy, and he seems to find it acceptable (well, he doesn't complain about it!!).

Squish him down into my lap. He's never had a *strong* latch, so I usually have to hold my breast when he nurses; but when he's in the cradle position, his lower half starts kinda rolling away and well..the rest starts following suit. I try and keep him close to my body hence "squishing down", but then he can't stretch out and he hates it.

I've been doing a variant of what Megan suggested, only he's sitting on the opposite leg of the breast he'll be nursing on, and reclined back against the crook of my arm. He's fine nursing like that - except for when he wants to go to bed for the night, then he keeps fussing hardcore until I lay him down and nurse him.

Anna - is your toddler laying on his back on your lap, or on his side? Maybe that's part of my issue, my son will be laying on his back if I nurse him cradle hold.

Definitely on his side.

I cross my legs (which elevates his body), put his head in the crook of my elbow, and stabilize his butt with that same hand. That keeps him on his side, but his legs aren't pinned at all. Then I can use my other hand to adjust latch/make sure I'm not flashing boob to a twenty yard radius.

Here is a picture (but my kid is bigger than that!): http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_k-kxUPhGQo8/SyGjirB-a5I/AAAAAAAAABc/PJvc2kW9kt4/s320/Cradle+hold.gif
