Natural Minded Holiday Crafts

I'm looking for some fun crafty things to do with my 4 and 6 yo that are:

 

  • not super messy or time consuming
  • not made of junk that falls apart
  • would look nice as actual house decor
  • respects nature, and enjoys it
  • speaks to their need for glitter and sparkles and little kid stuff

Some of these use natural materials, others are recycle/upcycle projects: 

 

Rolling beeswax candles

Lantern making with watercolour paper 

Votive candle holders from small glass baby or jam jars, covered in tissue paper

Twigs can be used to make stars and you can decorate with glitter etc. 

Wreaths using natural materials 

Little tree ornaments from acorns and pinecones 

Wrapping paper with potato prints - recycle newspaper or use brown kraft paper and lots of paint and glitter

Origami tree ornaments with foil paper 

 

For some of these crafts, you'll have to help with hot glue.

Mine LOVE cutting paper snowflakes, and I love hanging them around the house!

For "looks nice as actual house decor", one thing you can do is to decide on a colour scheme and try to stick to it. Instead of a full rainbow of colours in different tones and shades, you can pick a few that co-ordinate well and work with them. If there's enough glitter and variety of types of crafts, kids are usually pretty happy without using an entire clashing spectrum (unless you like the whole spectrum, then go for it!)

That's a good idea.  I've started doing things like turning the apple prints and leaf paint spatter cloths into throw pillows for their beds.  I don't mind kid crafty fun.  I just don't like plastic-y junk everywhere.  I want them to handle real things, and really have something to treasure at the end.  I know some craft (well, lots in the early stages) are just getting used to things, and experimenting, and I'm okay with that.  I have a book called Earthways...more Waldorf sorts of things.

popcorn chains and balls for the birds are nice.  You can have them inside for a while, then put them out to be eaten.
