Helping a child with asthma

I am looking for support and help as I try to mitigate my 5 year old's asthmatic responses to respiratory infections.  We have rescue inhalers that work pretty well, but aren't quite enough.  We have tried Singulair and had many side effects that made us quit.  I'd like to explore other more natural approaches to managing his asthma, which begins to get worse as the weather gets colder, and worse even then at night.

Help?

My 5 year old has had asthma since he was 18 months old.  It sounds like the same kind, more of a viral-induced asthma, rather than activity-induced.  For my DS, if he is having a mild episode, sometimes warm water and honey will calm it.  If it is worse (like it is right now), we have taken a more aggressive approach.  We do give him prednisone and flovent, as well as his albuterol inhaler and/or nebulizer.  Ever since he started drinking milk (grass-fed cows) from a local dairy, which is lightly pasteurized, but not homogenized, he has had way fewer episodes.  Before that, he had spent four separate overnight stays in the hospital.  I've heard that raw milk can help a lot, but it is really expensive where we live, so we are doing the next best thing...and it seems to be helping.  Also, vitamin D can help prevent asthma.  Especially in the winter, we make sure to supplement with vitamin D.

Thanks!  I'm intrigued by raw milk, but he has a dairy allergy.  I should try it anyway, as I know of folks who can tolerate raw milk with an allergy.

And the vitamin D suggestion is really good.  Can I ask for recommendations in forms?  My boys used to take cod liver oil but I discontinued that when I began a multi-vitamin because I was worried about the overall load of vitamins A and D.
