Should we purchase an umbrella policy?

Thread Starter

I'm finally getting around to combining my car and home insurance through one provider. With the discount for combining the two, we were able to up some of our liability amounts and add a rider to our home insurance.

With all this, we would be saving about $200/year.

But then the agent recommended we add an umbrella policy for $1 million. This will cost about $110/year after other discounts are factored in.

So now we would only save $90/year but we'd have some extra coverage on both car and home and would have the umbrella policy.

I was hoping to save more $$ per year, but the extra coverage is worth it - right?

Are there any websites or links to help me determine this? We've never purchased an umbrella policy before.

Thanks!

Personally, I do think the umbrella policy is worth it (and the price you mentioned is in line with what we pay for the same coverage) especially if you have kids and will have friends visiting and playing.  People are so sue-happy and the legal fees alone for a lawsuit could be financially devastating.
