Homeschooling in Asheville

Just wondering what the homeschool atmosphere is like in Asheville, and what sorts of activities and goings on are available for homeschool children. We are currently in Chapel Hill, which has an *amazing* homeschool community. That's pretty much the only thing keeping us here, though. I'm originally from the northern NC mountains and would love to find myself in the mountains again.

Hey apriljoy,

I've noticed over the past several years that not as many Asheville mamas use MDC to connect as used to at one time. I think they have a yahoo group they use a lot now -- http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ashevillemamas/ -- and maybe they're just all living free-range computer free lives, too!

Good luck,

Thank you! I just joined that group yesterday, so maybe I'll give them a holler.

True - the Asheville community is STRONG!  There are very active yahoo groups like the one mentioned above for crunchy mamas.  We also have an active yahoo group for secular homeschoolers - it is groups.yahoo.com/group/HOME-Asheville.  There's a religious one called WNC-Homeschoolers if that's more your style :)

There is a TON going on for homeschoolers here.  We have a 45-family co-op that meets weekly in the Spring and Fall.  There is also a smaller co-op in Fairview, and a Chrisian one that meets in South Asheville.  There are full day classes on a farm in Fairview, there is an active Teen Group, we have homeschool Odyssey of the Mind groups, music classes for homeschoolers, the science museum offers classes for homeschoolers, there are homeschool 4-H and scout troups, Waldorf supplemental classes, chess clubs, art classes, I could go on and on!  We love it here - VERY supportive of homeschoolers and really strong community!
