Offensive Baby Clothes?

Thread Starter

Long story, short: MIL bought a military-themed outfit of DS. "Major Cutie reporting for duty", camo pants, etc. I am anti-war, anti-military, anti-violence. Am I crazy for hating this outfit?

I posted on a local moms board on fb and the consensus seems to be that, yes, I am.

(I realize that a camo baby outfit isn't offensive to everyone, but it is to me.)

So what do you do about baby clothes that don't fit with your values? Or do you even care?

If it bothers you, don't put it on him.  Return it if you can.  We were anti-disney with baby #1...we are on #3 and between gifts and hand me downs, they wear whatever I pull out of the dresser.  Now if disney clothes get ruined, I don't try very hard to "save" them, I admit :)

When I saw the title of your thread, I thought about this shirt that my husband's cousin had on her baby at Thanksgiving one year that said something like "I love my daddy even though he's an asshole." I was a bit shocked, to say the least.

As for the camo outfit, I agree with just not putting it on your son. Depending on the sizing, maybe you could get away with it. "Oh, he just grows so fast! There's so many cute outfits he never got to wear." But then that could open you up to receiving another outfit in a bigger size...

When given clothes that I hate, I just smile, say thank you, and bury them in the bottom of the dresser until they are outgrown. winky.gif

So, my mother showed up with a few pieces of camo clothing too. I looked at her and rolled my eyes and said, "Seriously mother? You have spent far too much time in small town North Carolina!!" (no offense meant to anyone in NC, of course) Fortunately, she and I have enough truth between us that I can do that, but no... I do NOT think you are crazy to find such things offensive. I couldn't bring myself to dress DS in camo, so those items went into the donate pile (fortunately, she had bought them second-hand to begin with so she hadn't spent a lot on them anyway).

As for the title of this post, I thought a similar thing as bignerpie... my step-sister brought two custom made t-shirts to my sister when my nephew was born. One for her husband that said "Mother F#@&*%" (only spelled out explicitly) and one for her son that said "Boob Man". Obvioulsy not to be worn in  public, but this gives you an idea of the humor in my family.
